Job Description
Job Title: School Counselor Department: HGLCS
Title of Immediate Supervisor: Principal
POSITION SUMMARY: Assists students in choosing courses best suited to their interests while ensuring that students are placed in proper educational programs. Work with students and Teachers to ensure working towards best results for the students, educationally and personally.
RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:
1. Assist students in choosing courses of study best suited to their goals, aptitudes and interests.
2. Contact school districts if more information on new/entering students is needed.
3. Review transcripts to ensure students are placed in their proper educational program.
4. Annually review each student's educational progress and career plans with students individually, or in small groups. Reinforce student's educational plan as it related to career interests, life skills and world of work.
5. Update Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) Direct on transitional goals and plans for all Special Education students. Attend Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings for these students.
6. Consult with Teachers on ways to integrate career interests with education and to help document for each student those activities related to life skills and the world of work.
7. Organize and prepare the Regents exam school wide schedule. Communicate exam information with parents, Teachers, students, school districts, BOCES and transportation.
8. Consult with Teachers periodically about scheduling, student educational concerns or learning problems and new curriculum standards.
9. Order Middle School and High School exams.
10. Contact Lockport High School regarding the storage of Regents exams. Ensure testing materials are returned to the state/BOCES. Maintain contact with BOCES regarding scoring.
11. Endure each student is taking the exams they need for graduation.
12. Review referrals for all Residential students to see if they are appropriate for school placement.
13. Consult and work in areas of curriculum development with Administration and Teachers, especially regarding NYS curriculum and Regents requirements.
14. Do research on testing and curriculum. Interpret these results to students and when necessary to Teachers.
15. Help each student, through the counseling relationship, better understand him or herself, develop personal decision making competencies, and resolve special problems.
16. Consult with Teachers periodically about scheduling, student educational concerns or learning problems and new standards.
17. Create the master schedule for the regular school year and summer school. Communicate this information to the eSchool staff.
18. Use eSchool to create student and Teacher schedules and to update and maintain courses offered.
19. Provide small group experience in classrooms, in the community, and elsewhere.
20. To provide information and discussion on issues of adjustment and the universal foundation skills as outlined in the CDOS learning standards.
21. Organize and develop the guidance program.
22. Collect, disseminate and interpret education and occupational information that is current.
23. Provide information to students about schools of higher learning, schools of technical training, internships, apprenticeships and work place opportunities.
24. Perform Campus School in-services if requested by the Principal.
25. Maintain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and First Aid/CPR certification provided by the agency.
26. Attend all mandatory in-service training and regularly attends supervision meetings. Attends other training and in-services as needed to maintain a level of expertise in the field.
27. Any additional duties assigned by immediate supervisor.
SKILL, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Education and/or Professional Qualifications/Skills
' Masters Degree and NYS Guidance Counselor Certification.

8. Must comply with Agency safety standards and be responsible for own actions and conduct concerning safety and healthy working conditions.
