The Franklin County School Board invites candidates to apply for the position of Superintendent of Schools. The anticipated date of hire is July 1, 2020.

Community Highlights

Franklin County is located in the Blue Ridge foothills of Virginia. Franklin County’s history and current economy is deeply rooted in agriculture with three major industries; dairy, beef, and timber production. The County is also known for its outdoor activities offering more than 70 miles of blueways and two lakes: Smith Mountain and Philpott. The County is home to Ferrum College, a private four-year institution founded in 1913. Franklin County is the "front door" to The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail and home to the Harvester Performance Center. Franklin County also features local arts, crafts, and cultural vibrancy in the historic towns of Boones Mill and Rocky Mount

QUALIFICATIONS

The board has established the following qualifications for the next superintendent of Franklin County Public Schools:

• An earned doctorate is required.

• Experience as a principal is required.

• Residency in the school division is required.

• Experience as a central office administrator is preferred.

• Experience as an associate/assistant superintendent is preferred.

• Teaching experience at the elementary, middle and high school level are preferred.

Leadership and Management Skills – The successful candidate is a visionary and creative thinker, a team player who is comfortable with shared decision-making, and a decisive leader with strong communication skills.

Personal Characteristics – The successful candidate is a good listener, accessible, caring, consistent, enthusiastic, and influential.

Student Achievement – The successful candidate advocates for students in academics, career and technical education, and extracurricular activities. The successful candidate has a strong record of student achievement.

Community Relations – The successful candidate effectively advocates school issues and needs, promotes business and community involvement in schools, and inspires community confidence.

Staff Relations – The successful candidate creates an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect, maintains open channels of communication to and from staff, and has a process for recruiting and selecting top-quality staff members.

Board-Superintendent Relations – The successful candidate provides options and recommendations to the Board before accepting Board directives, presents a "united front" to staff and community, effectively mediates and accommodates different perspectives and assumes a lead role in decision-making while keeping the Board informed.

School Finance – The successful candidate advocates for school funding on behalf of the school division, develops and explains the rationale for the budget to the board and local officials, and offers creative funding solutions.

Areas of Expertise – The successful candidate has expertise in strategic planning and total quality management, creating and maintaining business partnerships, and a deep understanding of curriculum, instruction, budget and finance.
