BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Occupational therapists must hold a Bachelor, Masters, or Doctorate degree from an approved and accredited occupational therapy program. Occupational therapists must complete supervised clinical practice in varied settings. The job requires substantial prior experience that is extensive and varied, as well as advanced specialized skills. Previous pediatric experience is preferred. PWCS is interested in candidates with ESL and bilingual credentials and foreign language fluency.

STATE REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Must meet requirements set forth by the National Board For Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) and the Virginia Board of Medicine. This includes passage of the national certification examination and ongoing active participation in continuing competency learning activities to obtain and maintain licensure to practice as issued by the Virginia Board of Medicine (See 18 VAC 85-80-10 et seq.).

BASIC FUNCTION/NATURE OF WORK:

Occupational therapists are licensed health care professionals who provide educationally related services to special education students ages 2 through 21 when these services are needed for a student to benefit from the educational program. Occupational Therapists work on the acquisition of or development of compensatory strategies for fine motor skills, sensory motor skills, visual motor skills, visual perceptual skills, and self-care skills. Through initial/ongoing evaluation and treatment planning, the occupational therapist works with students on foundation skills needed for school participation utilizing task analysis and individually selected motor activities. The analytical skills required by the job are varied and advanced. Essential job functions require the ability to collaborate in developing and supporting long-and short-range objectives in the students' Individualized Educational Program (IEP). Occupational Therapists collaborate with team members to provide therapeutic interventions, environmental adaptations, and instructional modifications to support student achievement in the educational setting.

DIMENSIONS:

SUPERVISION • Supervises certified occupational therapy assistants (COTA) according to state regulations and assist the administrative coordinator in evaluation of the certified occupational therapy assistants job performance analysis. • Supervise and evaluate occupational therapy fieldwork students in accordance with accredited program guidelines.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/ILLUSTRATIVE EX OF WORK:

PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND ETHICS • Adheres to established federal, state, and local laws and regulations. • Refines and develops professional skills through in-service training, professional reading, and mandatory continuing education. • Maintains confidentiality of student information. • Exchanges professional information with peers through formal and informal means, and through mentoring of new therapists. • Works within the Prince William County Public School's standard operating procedures (SOP) and practices. GENERAL • Travel to assigned schools. • Makes scheduling decisions for service delivery based on individual student and school needs. • Responds to Child Study observations requests; providing recommendations in developing Child Study plans as needed. • Consults with educational staff on specific program needs as appropriate. • Responds to evaluation referrals for students with disabilities. The occupational therapist selects appropriate evaluation tools, evaluates student, interprets findings, and reports results. • Assists the IEP team in determining present level of performance/function and developing Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) goals and objectives. • Maintains oral and written communication with educational personnel, parents, and community agencies regarding assigned schools and students. This can include, but is not limited to therapy session logs/notes, data collection, reports, telephone contact, and Medicaid documentation. • Oversee implementation of therapeutic programs for students by educational personnel and student caregivers. • Participate in the selection, design and/or construction of necessary adaptive equipment.
