Summary and Overview
In 2015, the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and Springfield Public Schools partnered to form the Springfield Empowerment Zone Partnership (SEZP). SEZP is committed to ensuring that the middle and high schools in "The Zone" are engaging environments where teachers receive the supports they need to grow professionally, and students have the opportunity to acquire the academic and personal skills to succeed in the college or career of their choice.
Each SEZP school has the autonomy to craft and implement its own, unique vision for success and receives support from an ecosystem of national-caliber partners. For the Impact community, there is an overwhelming need for additional support and scaffolds for our English Language Learners. Our number students who are learning English has dramatically increased over the past few years. Therefore, for the 2019-2020 school year, there is a new role an ESL Specialist. Please see below for a description of the role.
Duties:
Coaches and supports teachers in planning, delivering, and assessing quality instruction for ELs with a focus on reading, writing, speaking, and listening
Plans, models, and co-teaches effective lessons with teachers in an ESL co-teaching model. Regularly visits classroom to provide non-evaluative feedback to teachers to improve instructional planning, delivery, and assessment with a focus on how to best support the successful language acquisition of ELs in the school
Provides leadership and support in the development, implementation, and revisions of the ESL curriculum as well as the "ESL ELA" curriculum
Analyzes MAP, ACCESS for ELs, and other assessment data to identify areas for improvement, establish goals, and monitor improvement
Develops and conducts professional developments for teachers and administrators regarding instructional strategies and best practices for ELs
Keeps up-to-date with all federal and state LEP/ EL guidelines
Is part of the Instructional Leadership Team to develop, maintain, implement, and assess the district's instructional program
Supports all members of the school with ELs as needed. This includes but is not limited to: MCAS preparation, creation of the master schedule, and ELL parent communication
Completes any other tasks as assigned by the principal or other members of administration as needed
Facilitates PLCS for ESL teachers
Manages and oversees the ACCESS testing
Qualifications:
Teacher Certification in ESL
Has held leadership positions
Currently an Impact Prep Employee
