JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Social Studies Instructional Coach will support teachers in the implementation of research-based instructional strategies. The Coach will work directly with teachers in schools to provide classroom demonstrations in rigorous standards-based teaching. He/she will provide collaborative and one-on-one instructional coaching and will facilitate teacher inquiry and related professional development. The Coach will work with administrators and teachers to align their work with district priorities. He/she will lead data sessions that look at both formative and summative assessment results; suggest and monitor intervention strategies and materials for students.

The Coach will focus on enhancing teachers' abilities to provide instruction that builds students' understanding of content knowledge and application, is academically rigorous, addresses the curriculum standards, and enhances students' engagement and ownership of their learning. In addition, as a member of a professional coaching community, the Social Studies Instructional Coach will participate in professional development and inquiry into his or her own practice, and perform system-wide duties as assigned.

The responsibilities of the Social Studies Instructional Coach may extend beyond the school day. To maximize the amount of time during the school day that the Social Studies Instructional Coach supports teachers directly, they will be expected to complete planning and organizational tasks outside of regular school hours. The Social Studies Instructional Coach will also be expected to attend professional development that occurs after school and in the summer.

REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Social Studies

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Model research-based instructional approaches and collaborate with the teacher to determine those approaches that best meet the students' needs.
  • Cognitively coach the teacher as he/she implements changes in instructional approaches; provide feedback to the teacher.
  • Teach demonstration lessons.
  • Provide ongoing professional development for teachers.
  • Assist teachers in aligning their teaching with appropriate SCSD curriculum and assessments.
  • Provide assessment support to teachers through collaborative analysis of student work and formal/informal assessments.
  • Assist teachers with integrating appropriate manipulative/technology into their content instruction.
  • Monitor the progress of students and offer suggestions for intervention or enrichment to meet students' social studies needs.
  • Participate in professional development for coaches, including peer observations, professional research, networking, and inquiry sessions.
  • Facilitate inquiry groups among teachers where current research on social studies integration is read and discussed.
  • Support the administration and leadership team in the creation of a school's professional development plan with specific, measurable and attainable benchmarks for teacher and student performance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum seven (7) years of teaching experience required
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience as a teacher leader
  • Appropriate New York State Teacher Certification in Social Studies
  • Possess an entrepreneurial spirit; be flexible, willing and able to play different instructional roles at the district and school level; and be willing to go above and beyond to meet the varied and constant needs of the students of the SCSD
  • Excellent organizational, communication and facilitation skills
  • Prior demonstration of exemplary attendance is expected of any candidate for hire
  • Training and/or experience with Culturally Relevant Education (preferred)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to work beyond the ten-month school year and typical staff day

SALARY/SALARY RANGE:

This position will earn a stipend of $8,000, in addition to the current starting salary of $48,500 for SCSD Teachers. With proof of outside, related experience and college transcripts, the salary will be increased pursuant to the Unit 1 contractual agreement.
