JOB DESCRIPTION:

This critical position will support elementary writing instruction across all elementary schools in the district to ensure a successful launch of the district-wide writing initiative. Using a variety of virtual and in-person methods, the writing coach will provide targeted support to elementary writing teachers and instructional coaches. The writing coach will serve as a liaison between writing classrooms and the ELA department. This position will target support to teachers in grade three in SY 2017-18 with some support provided to other elementary grade levels in the area of effective writing instruction.

REPORTS TO: Director of English Language Arts

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teacher/School Support
    • Conduct writing walkthroughs in grade 3 classrooms
    • Observe writing instruction in grade 3 across the district
    • Collaborate with teachers and provide specific strategies to improve instructional delivery
    • Provide professional development and materials to support teachers
    • Design virtual professional development
    • Oversee virtual support platforms
    • Facilitate labsites and lesson studies
    • Design and deliver professional development sessions (including after school, summer, and Saturday Academies)
    • Support quarterly unit planning meetings
    • Facilitate ongoing data collection
    • Model and/or co-teach as needed to improve instructional delivery practices
  • Organizational Support
    • Cultivate a standards-based and results-oriented culture
    • Progress monitor district-wide student performance and growth
    • Use trend data from walkthroughs and classroom observations to determine professional development needs for teachers
    • Maintain and build content knowledge of current research and best practices in writing instruction and attend ongoing professional development when recommended
    • Complete any additional duties as assigned by the Director of English Language Arts, the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, and/or the Chief Academic Officer
    • Coordinate inventorying and identifying material needs for assigned school sites


KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

  • Record of helping students achieve success, primarily with students of color and low-income students
  • Strong content knowledge in the teaching of writing
  • Experience in analyzing various data sources and using results to design and refine instruction
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, facilitate, and evaluate professional development for teachers
  • Experience implementing effective instructional practices, designing engaging lessons, and using data and formative assessment in the classroom
  • Significant experience with curriculum development and daily lesson planning
  • Ability to plan, model, coach, and provide feedback to individual teachers and teams of teachers to improve teaching and learning
  • Knowledge of Personalized Learning (PL) and how the Core Four (Data-Driven Decisions, Targeted Instruction, Student Reflection and Ownership, Integrated Digital Content) should be evidence in elementary classrooms


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum five (5) years of teaching experience required
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience leading other teachers to achieve strong academic results
  • Appropriate New York State Teacher Certification*
  • Unquestioned integrity and commitment to the SCSD mission and willingness to serve the SCSD community
  • Excellent organizational, communication and facilitation skills
  • Prior demonstration of exemplary attendance is expected of any candidate for hire
  • Training and/or experience with Culturally Relevant Education (preferred)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to work beyond the ten-month school year and student day.

SALARY/SALARY RANGE:

This position will earn a stipend of $8,000, in addition to the current starting salary of $48,500 for SCSD Teachers. With proof of outside, related experience and college transcripts, the salary will be increased pursuant to the Unit 1 contractual agreement.
