    JOB DESCRIPTION
    Job Summary: Under the general direction of the Principal and Assistant Principal, the Parent Educators will work collaboratively with 600+ preschool student families at Vivian D. Adams Early Childhood Center and Katie Harper Wright Elementary School, education staff and community partners to ensure that the program meets the needs of the whole child and supports parents/guardians in addressing family needs and setting and achieving ambitious family goals.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : (Essential Job Functions)

    Parent Engagement and Education
  • Regular attendance to perform assigned duties;
  • Collaborate with teachers and instructional leaders to engage families in the classroom and school, including meaningful volunteer opportunities;
  • Ensure that the preschool program maintains a welcoming environment for parents;
  • Lead development and implementation of parent education and employment opportunities, leveraging internal resources and community partners; solicit family input on family education offerings;
  • Implement and support activities to ensure a strong connection between home and school, including take-home learning activities;
  • Engage families in parent advisory committee and other leadership opportunities;

  • Eligibility and Recruitment
  • Support program efforts to identify, screen and recruit the most at-risk children in the community;
  • Educate families about the importance of early learning programs and support families in completing the enrollment process;
  • Identify and develop potential partnerships with community entities with access to priority populations;
  • Maintain positive relationships with volunteers, students, parents, staff, and other partners;

  • Attendance
  • Contact families of absent students to determine reasons for absence;
  • Review attendance of absent students to identify patters of absenteeism;
  • Determine supports needed to support regular attendance and connect families to resources as appropriate; educate families about benefits and importance of regular attendance;

  • Comprehensive Services
  • Monitor health and dental records to ensure that children receive regular screenings and follow-up for any treatment needs;
  • Maintain accurate and well-ordered documentation on all files, ensuring appropriate documentation in accordance with State and program requirements;
  • Coordinate parent meetings and workshops to educate families in the areas of child health, mental health, and development;
  • Assist families in establishing a "medical home" and "dental home" for their children to ensure access to consistent health care;
  • Collaborate with mental health consultant to facilitate evaluation of children with parent consent and referrals to mental health resources as needed;
  • Coordinate and conduct home visits as needed to support home-school connection, address attendance concerns, and provide other family supports;
  • Provide supports to children with special needs, including empowering families as advocates for their children;
  • Serve as a Mandated Reporter;

  • Connection to Resources
  • Assess family needs and identify parent/guardian goals for family. Work with families to develop a plan towards meeting needs and achieving goals. Refer families to resources to support their plan. Document referrals and progress towards goals and follow-up with families regarding referrals on a regular basis.

  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with case management or workforce development a plus;
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in early childhood a plus;
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in parent engagement a plus;
  • Must have high level of organization and the ability to coordinate and organize materials with attention to detail;
  • Interpersonal skills; collaborative thinking; ability to use tact, patience and courtesy;
  • Strong problem solving skills.

  • WORKING CONDITIONS:
    Office environment; walking, standing, squatting, listening and speaking to exchange information and make presentations; seeing to monitor various activities; read documents, view computer monitor, kneeling, bending at the waist, sitting for extended periods of time; reaching overhead, above shoulders, and horizontally, or bending at the waist to retrieve and store files; lifting semi heavy objects; driving a vehicle to conduct work, moderate travel.
