Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit is among the most established and well-regarded Jewish day schools in the United States. All of the school’s educational learning communities now provide space for self-directed study, creativity and flexibility, and reflect Hillel’s mission to deliver an inspiring, modern curriculum in an environment where students can master skills to help them succeed: creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking. In Fall 2019, Hillel will open a new expansion to its early childhood center, to accommodate a lengthy waiting list for its fully subscribed, NAEYC-certified early childhood program.

The Head of School at Hillel Day School will be the executive, educational and administrative leader of the school. Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the Head of School will have ultimate responsibility for animating and implementing the vision and mission of the school and for ensuring an outstanding general studies and Jewish education program.
The Head of School will be a visionary educator expected to advance the school's commitment to a comprehensive, dynamic and multidimensional learning environment (for students and teachers) for which Hillel is known. The Head of School is responsible for attracting and retaining world-class faculty and empowering them to engage students in a supportive and rigorous learning environment. The Head of School will lead efforts to define strategic priorities and establish systems that respond to today’s educational challenges and opportunities to ensure the school’s and its students’ future success.
The Head of School will have primary responsibility for all school operations, including supervision of the school's leadership team, oversight of its financial well-being, maintenance of board relations, advancement of its financial resource development and growth of its enrollment. As the professional leader, the Head of School will be a critical voice in setting the tone of the school -- nurturing a welcoming, creative and respectful culture. In addition, the Head of School will play a key role in articulating and modeling the values and ethos of Hillel, throughout the community and beyond.
The Head of School will be a compassionate leader with a demonstrated enthusiasm for Jewish life and living, exemplary communication skills and a high emotional quotient. This position will require a dedicated student-centered educator who will demonstrate a genuine passion and appreciation for children and their well-being. The Head of School will serve as an advocate for the school, the community, Israel and the Jewish people.

This position requires an innovative and results-oriented educator who engenders confidence and approaches the job with a curiosity and a willingness to embrace bold ideas. The successful Head of School will also possess the following:
- Proven track record as an organizational leader and/or educational administrator.
- Ability to see the “big picture” and maintain a strategic overview in addressing problems and planning solutions in a results-oriented manner. Vision to develop and advocate for new, imaginative and unique solutions.
- Ability to set clear priorities from amongst a number of diverse tasks and needs, meet predetermined schedules and lay out a timely course of action to address issues and problems.
- Open and collaborative management and leadership style. Comfort with soliciting input from others while still being decisive and independent in the decision-making process. Ability to delegate and transfer authority and responsibility.
- Demonstrated track-record of identifying, attracting and developing top talent; focused on professional development and managing performance of faculty and staff.
- Ability to facilitate thoughtful conversations about Jewish life, community and practice.
- Visionary leader with a proven growth mindset, instilling a culture of excellence in every facet of the school.
- Successful track record with the development and implementation of an advancement strategy and experience with donor cultivation; skilled at building relationships with internal and external community stakeholders.
- Financial acumen; able to understand budgets and set financial priorities.
- A good listener who is warm, honest and fair in dealing with others. Ability to maintain composure and effectiveness under pressure. Ability to approach work with sense of creative energy, enthusiasm and humor, while setting and maintaining appropriate boundaries.
- Excellent communication skills, in writing and in public speaking before groups of different sizes and constituencies.
- Facility with Hebrew language and knowledge of, and personal commitment to, Jewish ideals, values, history and tradition.
- Genuine respect for all streams of Judaism and openness to a variety of ritual and practice.
- Advanced degree in a related field preferred.
