JOB TITLE : Supervisor, Language Arts - Secondary

REPORTS TO : Coordinator, Language Arts - Secondary

DEFINITION : Provides support in the design, development, and implementation of curriculum for secondary English language arts for Grades 6 to 12 that aligns with the Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards. Ensures that all initiatives support the system-wide goals identified in Blueprint 2.0 and the Baltimore County Public Schools' (BCPS) Master Plan . Supervises the Specialist and Resource teachers as they support both curriculum design and curriculum implementation in the schools.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES :
  • Supports the Coordinator in the communication of the Vision and the Mission of the English Language Arts program.
  • Provides leadership in the design and development of the curriculum for grades 6 to 12 that aligns with the Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards and that reflects research-based best practices.
  • Supports the development of embedded, periodic assessments, benchmark assessments, and final exams for secondary English language arts that are integrated and aligned to the Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards.
  • Collaborates with content offices and the Office of Special Education to assist in the development and monitoring of a response to intervention plan that addresses appropriate research-based reading intervention practices and resources.
  • Supports the development of a list of approved textbooks, instructional materials, technologies, and software for secondary English language arts and related to courses.
  • Provides daily, consistent, ongoing support to secondary schools to guide the implementation of the English language arts curriculum.
  • Supports opportunities for teachers to obtain and maintain highly qualified status in secondary English language arts.
  • Maintains collaborative relationships with other curricular offices to facilitate a cohesive English language arts program, pre-kindergarten to Grade 12.
  • Maintains collaborative relationships with MSDE, community agencies, institutions of higher learning, and other leaders in secondary English language arts that benefit schools and support system priorities.
  • Collaborates and coordinates with the Office of Organizational Development for the delivery of professional development for the middle and high school programs as delineated in our BCPS Theory of Action and the Teaching and Learning Framework.
  • Supports the evaluation of the performance and professional growth and development of personnel within secondary English language arts, including support to school-based administrators in the appraisal process.
  • Assists in the development and administration of operating, capital, and other budgets, and assists in monitoring business operations to ensure the efficient and effective use of resources. Assists with planning, budgeting, and controlling department expenditures and grants.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Education, Training and Experience :
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in a field directly related to the assignment; plus five years of progressively responsible leadership/management experience in reading education.
  • Minimum of five years of successful teaching or related experience is required.

Licenses and Certificates :
  • Possession of, or eligibility for, a Maryland Advanced Professional Certificate with an Administrator I endorsement is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of secondary instruction in English/language arts.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development and implementation.
  • Technology competency.
  • Knowledge of and skill in the use of database, internet, spreadsheet, word processing, and related applications.
  • Knowledge of and skill in data analysis.
  • Demonstration of outstanding oral and written communications skills.
  • Demonstration of strong leadership, management, and human relations skills.
  • Ability to properly maintain confidential information.


PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS :
The work of this class is generally sedentary and performed in an office and school environment. Work includes the operation of office equipment, including personal computers, and occasional limited physical activities.

SALARY: Grade 10 on the BCPS CASE 12 Month payscale $90,400 - $131,696.

Eligible for membership in the Maryland State Retirement System.

Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • All persons employed by the Baltimore County Public Schools, regular and temporary, are required to be fingerprinted and have a criminal background investigation (State of Maryland, Senate Bill 315, effective October 1, 1986) completed. The fee charged for fingerprinting is $81.00. An identification card will be issued which must be shown prior to employment.
  • Anyone offered employment is required to provide proper identification and documentation of eligibility for employment in the US.
  • If you have military experience you will be asked to provide a copy of DD214.
  • Official transcripts for all higher education must be received prior to contract signing.
  • Some positions will require employees to undergo a physical examination and/or drug testing.
  • All newly hired personnel must attend a Badges and Benefits session.
  • Additional job verification will be required for salary credit.
