ABOUT THE SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT

Standley Lake High School serves a diverse population of more than 1300 students in grades 9 through 12 with academically challenging curricula designed to prepare students for both career and college opportunities after high school. Gator Strong is the foundation of our school culture and is evident in all our work as a school community. The SLHS Gator community is driven through shared leadership. We are committed to being a comprehensive, community high school that offers students the opportunity to grow through not only core academics, but also through experiences in athletics, fine and performing arts, leadership, and Career and Technical Education.

Standley Lake High School offers 14 different AP courses, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, and initial implementation of the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP). Standley Lake High School also offers a robust center program for Special Education students and second language learners with a caring and experienced staff.

Student athletic and activity involvement is highly encouraged through our 21 varsity level sports programs and a number of diverse co-curricular clubs and activities. Many of our programs compete at the national level, including our national award winning journalism newspaper The Lake, Poms, Speech and Debate, and our FCCLA chapter. The music program (vocal and instrumental) continues to thrive and has seen enormous growth over the past three years.

ABOUT THE JOB

Ceramics/Jewelry/Digital Photography
Bachelors or Masters Degree in the Visual Arts: Art Education
Standley Lake High School is seeking a visual arts teacher with a primary responsibility in Ceramics and Jewelry. Must be flexible about teaching other visual art areas if enrollment demands change. Such areas may include Photography, Painting, Drawing and Graphics.
Teacher needs a high degree of metalsmithing/ceramics skills. Skills should include knowledge of technical problems, materials and various other skills in metalsmithing and ceramics.
Understanding of traditional photography/digital photography skills is preferred. Skills should include knowledge of technical problems, chemicals, materials and various other skills in the medium.
Teacher should have a working knowledge of how to do minor mechanical repairs necessary to preserve budget.
Must be willing to work collaboratively through the Professional Learning Community process with all members of the art department - Specifically, must be willing to openly and consistently plan, develop assessments, and share/reflect on data from classes with members of the art department in ways that take advantage the collective wisdom of the team in order to continuously improve teaching methods that most strategically influence student learning in art classes.
Must be willing to incorporate philosophical approaches and strategies of the IB Middle Years Program.
The teacher should be familiar with National, Colorado and Jefferson County Standards for the Visual Arts.
Since course demand is enrollment driven, teacher needs strong skills in dealing with adolescents in a positive and nurturing fashion to help foster competence, pride, and confidence.
Teacher must be willing to sell the art program through entering student artwork in shows, helping students develop portfolios, maintaining displays with student work, and generating enthusiastic and effective ways to attract students to the art program.
Teacher will be responsible for helping to maintain the jewelry/ceramics/photography/painting and general departmental enrollment.
Teacher should have a working knowledge of how to do minor mechanical repairs necessary to preserve budget.
Teacher should have computer competence, net access, and general technological enculturation.
Portfolio presentation requested and should include student and teacher work samples, a lesson and a rubric.
Recommendations requested.

RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Teach students the principles of design through disciplines such as drawing, painting, photography, metals and sculpture.

Demonstrates the ability to incorporate the use of technology into curriculum as it relates to art.

Encourage student creativity.

Ability to assess students and differentiate instruction to meet all students' abilities.

Demonstrate the ability to become a valuable and contributing member of the staff, including work with co-curricular and enrichment activities.

Demonstrated knowledge secondary Art curriculum Academic Standards.

Willingness to participate in County and State art shows.

Ability to use effective classroom management techniques creating a positive and supportive education environment.

QUALIFICATIONS: Must hold a valid Colorado teaching license or authorization. Must meet content-area qualifications, which could include the appropriate license endorsement, degree in the content area, Colorado State Board of Education-approved content exam, or 36 credit hours as determined by the district.

EXPERIENCE: Teacher needs a high degree of graphic/drawing skills. Skills should include knowledge of technical problems, materials and software. Strong organizational and leadership skills and the ability to work with parents, community, students, other teachers and administrators in collaborative settings.
