Executive Director, Learning and Teaching Services

Summary: The Executive Director of Learning and Teaching is responsible for leveraging secondary central office staff members in providing the needed resources, professional learning and comprehensive support to ensure all CMS secondary teachers and students are able to implement the CMS Strategic Plan's vision for teaching and learning. Ensuring cohesive practice, project management and communication within the department (secondary curriculum, advanced studies and virtual learning and media services departments) are vital components of this position. Ensuring cohesive practice, project management and communication across all central office departments is also key to this work. Engaging in the continuous improvement process, inclusive of analysis of current practice and communication with district leaders about adjustments and next steps is another essential practice for the Executive Director. The Executive Director of Learning and Teaching creates the conditions for district leaders and staff members to support schools' ability to fulfill Strategic Plan 2024.

Essential Duties: (These duties represent a sample and may vary by position.)
  • Champions the district's vision for teaching and learning, authentically communicating its present purpose and the possibilities it creates for the future for students
  • Articulates and consistently acts in accordance with a clearly defined leadership stance that honors people and ensures their professionalism and relentless pursuit of excellence
  • Provides the conditions within the department and between district office departments to ensure principals and teachers have the support needed to impact teaching and learning in alignment with the district's strategic plan
  • Collaborates with the supervisor and executive staff members to ensure the cohesion and integration of the instructional work across the district in service to schools
  • Collaborates with key stakeholders involved in realizing the goals of the strategic plan
  • Ensures all district staff members across departments can provide comprehensive support to all secondary schools in determining the effectiveness of instruction and developing strategies to improve the student learning experience
  • Creates an organizational structure within the department to ensure clarity of roles, goals, job descriptions, methods for collaborating and ongoing communication
  • Supports staff members in ensuring that the district office can maintain needed curricular resources, respond to needs as they arise, evaluate the current implementation and anticipate and ensure that future needs are met
  • Collaborate across departments to create and implement innovative strategies for district staff to provide personalized, real-time support for schools to be able to drive their own continuous improvement
  • Recruits, hires, coaches and evaluates staff members in the secondary learning department
  • Ensures the aligned and effective use of financial resources to support the district's operations in alignment to the strategic plan
  • Performs related duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

Minimum
  • Master's Degree in an education field
  • 5 years successful teaching experience and 3 years of experience as a principal or as an educational leader
  • Demonstrated ability to lead all school staff professionals to achieve educational goals
  • Innate ability to identify and trouble shoot sensitive and critical issues

Desired
  • Doctorate in an education field
  • 5 years successful teaching experience and 5 years as a principal
  • Bilingual skills

Licensing / Certification Requirements: Certificate in teaching and in educational leadership or administration and supervision. NC principal or superintendent license preferred.
