SUMMARY:
The position of physical education teacher helps students learn skills and develop attitudes and appreciations which will lead them toward the fulfillment of the district's goals of education. This position plans physical education programs to promote development of student's physical attributes and social skills. The PE Instructor teaches individual and team sports to students, utilizing knowledge of sports techniques and of physical capabilities of students. The employee organizes, leads, instructs, and referees indoor and outdoor games, such as volleyball, baseball, and basketball. Instructs individuals or groups in beginning or advanced calisthenics, gymnastics, or corrective exercises, determining type and level of difficulty of exercises, corrections needed, and prescribed movements, applying knowledge of sports, physiology, and corrective techniques. Teaches and demonstrates use of gymnastic and training apparatus, such as trampolines and weights; may teach students with disabilities.

CONTEXT AND MISSION:
Highline Public Schools serves approximately 19,000 students in the communities of Burien, Des Moines, Normandy Park, SeaTac, and White Center in Washington State. In 2013, parents, students, community members, and staff at all levels of the district came together to develop a strategic plan that reflects our goals and dreams for our students. JOB DESCRIPTION:
PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER * Work collaboratively and cooperatively with building subject area teachers to develop and align curriculum, instruction, and interdisciplinary projects. * Enlist the assistance of counselors, administration, and other support personnel where appropriate. * Provide lesson plans for guest teacher. * Establish clear parameters for student behavior in the classroom. * Discipline student in a firm and controlled manner. * Encourage students to develop courtesy, self-control, respect, and responsibility. * Enforce rules throughout the school. * Demonstrate continued professional development. * Develops rapport with students as individuals in a professional manner. * Participates in extra-curricular responsibilities. * Teaches individual and team sports to students, utilizing knowledge of sports techniques and physical capacities of students. * Organizes, leads, instructs, and referees indoor and outdoor games and exercise activities. Other Functions * Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit and supporting student learning objectives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Current Washington State Teacher's certificate with appropriate subject area endorsement(s) ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: CPR and First Aid Certification

The employee must constantly lift up to 10 pounds, will frequently be required to lift up to 20 pounds and will occasionally be required to lift up to 50 pounds; weights 50 -79 lbs. should be done with assistance; weights 80 lbs. or greater should be done with mechanical lift and carry only. Employees in this position are constantly required to push/pull a maximum force of up to 10 pounds, frequently push/pull a force of up to 30 pounds and occasionally push/pull a force of up to 50 pounds. Weights between 50 and 80 pounds should be pushed/pulled with assistance; weight 80 pounds or greater should be pushed/pulled with mechanical lift and carry only. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in indoor and outdoor conditions in artificial and natural lighting.
