Teacher, CTE MS PLTW Gateway and Business Education (2019/2020)

Summary: Under general direction of a principal, provides leadership in an educational environment that encourages and nurtures learning for all students. Provides supervision to students in a variety of school related settings, monitors and evaluates student outcomes, develops, selects or modifies lessons plans to ensure all student needs are met, and maintains appropriate records and follows all policies and procedures of NCDPI and CMS. Provides quality standards-based instruction in the area of Business Education; Technology Education and assesses and encourages student progress, manages an effective learning environment to maximize student achievement.

Essential Duties: (These duties represent a sample and may vary by position.)

  • Demonstrates and teaches Business Education in a classroom setting
  • Teaches knowledge and understanding of careers in Business Education.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student growth and progress in Business Education activities and modifies instructional methods to fit student's individual needs.
  • Continues to participate in professional development to stay knowledgeable of current developments in the Business Education field. This includes, but is not limited to, attending seminars, workshops, and/or participating in professional learning communities (PLC).
  • Prepares instructional materials aligned with curriculum standards, maintains equipment, supplies, and other resources and maintains inventory records in accordance with district policies and procedures.


  • Coordinate CTE Student Organization activities for local, regional, state and/or national competition
  • Attend District PLC meetings as scheduled


  • Demonstrates and teaches PLTW Technology Education in a classroom setting using computational analysis and problem solving through mobile app development and/or physical computing.
  • Teaches knowledge and understanding of careers in PLTW Technology Education.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student growth and progress in PLTW Gateway to Technology activities and modifies instructional methods to fit student's individual needs.
  • Continues to participate in professional development to stay knowledgeable of current developments in the PLTW field. This includes, but is not limited to, attending seminars, workshops, and/or participating in professional learning communities (PLC).
  • Demonstrates and teaches Computer Science in a classroom setting using computational analysis and problem solving through mobile app development and/or physical computing.
  • Provides instruction and course/program management in the overall knowledge and application of hardware design and software development, allowing students to discover computer science concepts and skills by creating personally relevant, tangible, and shareable projects.
  • Teaches knowledge and understanding of careers in Computer Science.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student growth and progress in Computer Science activities and modifies instructional methods to fit student's individual needs.


  • Manages inventory control including purchasing materials, supplies, equipment and tools
  • Performs related duties as assigned.


Qualifications/Licensure:

Residency License(s)

Required Degree Level: Bachelor's Degree

AND

24 credit hours in the Content area

OR

Passing the NC SBE Licensure Area Exam

(Business or Technology Education)

AND

Completion of NCSBE Pre-service Requirements

AND

Enroll in EPP (Educational Preparation Program

CTE Restricted License(s):

  • Bachelor's Degree


Examples of Related Degrees: Accounting, Administrative Systems, Business Administration, Computer Science, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Information Technologies, Management, MIS (Management Information Systems), Marketing

Required Years of Work Experience for the CTE Restricted route: 2 years within past 5 years

Required Credentials: NCSBE approved specialty area exam

Required Induction for the CTE Restricted route: NC DPI sponsored New Teacher Induction Program

40 Hour Induction beginning Year One

Training / Certification Requirements: Completion of Project Lead the Way training (PLTW) required prior to teaching any PLTW course

  • Knowledge of and skill in the use of database, Internet, spreadsheet, word processing, and related applications.
  • Knowledge of the Business Education curriculum, effective instructional techniques, instructional materials, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans.
  • Skills in preparing and implementing lesson plans and instructing students.
  • Skill in communicating with students, their parents, administrators, and others.
  • Skill in supervising students and managing behavior.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, parents, and staff. Ability to maintain confidential information.

Physical Requirements: Work requires the ability to bend, stand, and walk in a school laboratory for extended periods on a daily basis. Requires lifting and moving equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds. Manual dexterity also required.
