The PGCPS/NDMU Special Education Dual-Certification Program:

The Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) / Notre Dame of Maryland University (NDMU) Special Education Dual-Certification Program was created to recruit, develop, deploy, and certify high quality teachers to meet the growing demands of PGCPS special education programs. Resident Teachers in this program participate in this program participate in a two-year long training program that includes: summer pre-service training, graduate-level certification coursework, supervised internship, and mentoring during the residency phase.

Position Description:

A Supervising Teacher is a certified and successful PGCPS retiree who provides support for Resident Teacher interns throughout the supervised internship phase of their program. Using best practices for adult learning, the Supervising Teacher brings sample materials, teaching strategies, and organizational routines to the Resident Teacher interns during the critical first four to eight weeks of the school year.

Detailed Description:

Specific responsibilities include:


  • Modeling and teaching best practices and professionalism;
  • Communicating orally and in written text;
  • Helping Resident Teacher interns apply training to daily classroom experiences;
  • Documenting and reporting Resident Teacher interns' progress on an ongoing basis;
  • Participating in planning meetings with PGCPS/NDMU Special Education Dual-Certification program leaders;
  • Attending preparatory training sessions during the summer; and
  • Conducting non-evaluative observations and providing feedback to Resident Teacher interns.


  • Job Requirements:

    Requirements:

  • Holds a valid Advanced Professional Certificate (APC) with concentration in special education and elementary education (grades 1-6);
  • Retired from Prince George's County Public Schools (or retiring by the end of SY2018-2019) and;
  • 1 letter of professional reference from a previous principal.

  • Qualifications:

    Successful applicants to the Supervising Teacher position will demonstrate strong facilitation, time management, organizational and communication skills, and a history of high expectations for and success with students and teachers. Ideal candidates will also have:

  • Strong teaching background with a specialty in special education and a elementary education;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Cohesive Framework, including Framework for Teaching, Common Core State Standards and Student Learning Objectives;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the teaching and learning process across early childhood development and elementary education;
  • Experience in collaborative planning and working with diverse populations;
  • Strong ability to give and receive constructive, appropriate feedback on teaching;
  • Experience and/or knowledge of adult learning theory;
  • Previous experience with and/or personal experience as an alternate route teacher (preferred, not required);
  • Experience working with new teachers;
  • Evidence of demonstrated teacher leadership; and
  • Experience integrating a variety of technology into the curriculum and instruction.
