Position Summary

Teacher Outcomes and Responsibilities
Curriculum and Instruction
 
Key Outcome : Students experience an engaging, rigorous and developmentally appropriate instructional program throughout the year, building independence and lifelong habits of learning, thinking and doing.
 
Key responsibilities :
  • Provide daily Integrated (push in) Co-teaching for MLL students in the classroom across subject areas
  • Provide daily Stand-alone ENL intervention instruction to MLL students using a research based intervention curriculum
  • Create individual learning profiles and plans for all MLL's
  • Co-Plan weekly with grade teams and teachers at the unit and lesson level using the New Language Arts Progressions (for progressions: https://www.engageny.org/resource/new-york-state-bilingual-common-core-initiative )
  • For MLL student who also have an IEP co-plan with teachers and the SPED coordinator to provide specially designed instruction with effective Sheltered English Instruction and other research-based ELL instructional strategies.
Assessment
 
Key Outcome : Teachers know how students are progressing at all times, and use knowledge of student growth areas to address whole groups, small groups and individual students every day.
 
Key responsibilities :
  • Conduct frequent checks of understanding when teaching MLL students
  • Conduct pre and post tests and formative assessments for ELL students in Stand-alone small group ENL
  • Monitor MLL students' Tier 1 progress through classroom data trackers
  • Assist the Special Education and ENL/MLL Specialist with NYSITELL and NYSESLAT administration and scoring
  • Write detailed report cards tri-annually to communicate student progress to families
Management
 
Key Outcome : Classrooms are safe, positive communities where students develop the social and emotional skills to succeed in academic settings and in life.
 
Key responsibilities :
  • Use Responsive Classroom strategies and Teacher Language to build a safe, orderly, inclusive and positive classroom community
  • Ensure a safe physical and emotional environment for students through Interactive Modeling, logical consequences and consistent routines
  • Take responsibility for order and productivity by taking a positive and firm problem-solving approach
  • When providing Integrated Co-Teaching ENL instruction ensure that management is aligned with each classroom's routines
Collaboration with Families
 
Key Outcomes : Each family experiences how the school comes to know and honor them as participants and values their efforts and contributions. Parents and guardians are aware of student progress and are welcome in the community.
 
Key responsibilities :
  • Build a rapport with MLL families
  • Begin the year with purposeful, positive contact with each MLL family to learn about their hopes and dreams and to establish a productive relationship
  • Communicate with MLL families through a daily double-entry log/progress report, phone calls and meetings as necessary
  • Participate in parent association meetings during the year as necessary
  • In collaboration with other staff, coordinate at least one special event to encourage MLL family involvement and dialogue about students
  • Meet with MLL families three times a year (report card conferences)
  • Involve MLL families through classroom student work celebrations and volunteer opportunities
Professional Learning
 
Key Outcomes: Teachers and Administrators build stronger capacity to provide MLL students in their classrooms with differentiated ENL practices for maximum access to their learning.
 
Key responsibilities :
 
  • Take the lead in building teachers' capacity with Sheltered English Instruction so that it is consistently reflected in their planning, teaching and access to learning for MLL students across subject areas
  • Receive ongoing coaching from ENL/MLL Specialist and the NYC Special Education Collaborative through on site coaching and workshops to ensure that you are current in all aspects of ELL laws and current practice
  • Stay current on ENL trends on a national and state level to inform your practice and to build the school's capacity to serve MLLs
  • Focus professional growth in the areas of English Language Learners, effective co-teaching, Universal Design for Learning & Specially Designed Instruction to ensure optimal academic access and engagement in learning
 
Leadership and Staff Collaboration
 
Key Outcome : Our entire staff participates in building norms that create a powerful and positive learning environment, and we exemplify them together.
 
Key responsibilities :
  • Beginning and end of day:
    • Arrive in time to be prepared for picking up students at 8:15 am and begin the instructional day
    • Assist with dismissal on a daily basis until approximately 3:40 pm
  • Participate actively in the school's established professional development structures, including sharing best practices with colleagues
  • Prepare for weekly grade team planning meetings and participate in shared planning
  • Use some preparation periods and other available times to meet with:
    • Principal and assistant principal to monitor student progress, teaching, and professional goals
    • Teachers
    • Instructional consultants or coaches based on individual or classroom needs
    • Your direct supervisor
    • Manager of Special Education Services
    • ENL/MLL Specialist
    • Student Support Team meetings
  • Participate in Harlem Link's ENL recruitment and retention efforts
  • Assist with state testing accommodations for MLL students
Qualifications
  • NYS certification that is current and valid
  • NYS ESL or Bilingual Certification a strong addition
  • A Master's Degree in Education
  • Experienced teaching in an underserved community
  • Committed to closing the Opportunity Gap
  • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills
  • Exhibit Culturally Responsive Pedagogy in approach
  • Possess a strong philosophical belief that all children belong and stop at nothing to ensure a successful, integrated education
*Compensation is competitive with the NYC DOE pay scale and commensurate with experience.
