Description

1.0FTE; Regular Contract; 190 days + 5 additional days at the beginning of instructional year to update health care plans + 5 additional days staring early-mid August for orientation

The School Nurse strengthens and facilitates the educational process by modifying or removing health-related barriers to learning in individual students and by promoting an optimal level of wellness for students and staff. The School Nurse assumes responsibility for appropriate assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation and/or referral activities; serves as the direct link between physicians, families, and community agencies to assure access and continuity of health care for students; provides relevant instruction, counseling, and guidance to students, parents and staff concerning health-related issues; upholds professional standards, the state Nurse Practice Act, and other state and local statutes and regulations applicable to school nursing practice; and adheres to District policies and administrative guidelines.

Required:

Bachelor's degree in Nursing (minimum of 2.75 GPA on a 4.0 scale) required.

Experience in Child Health Care required.

Certification in CPR required.

Valid Wisconsin license as a Registered Professional Nurse.

Valid driver's license required.

Preferred: DPI School Nurse Certification within three (3) years of employment.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

Applies appropriate theory as a basis for decision-making in nursing practice.

Maintains a comprehensive school health program including emergency nursing services.

Collects information about the health and developmental status of students in a systematic and continuous manner.

Collects and uses date regarding immunization, health and developmental status of students to determine a nursing diagnosis.

Develops a nursing care plan with specific goals and interventions delineating school-nursing actions unique to students' needs.

Implements nursing actions that promote, maintain, or restore health, prevent illness, and effect rehabilitation.

Assesses student responses to nursing actions in order to revise the database, nursing diagnosis, and nursing care plan and to determine progress made toward goal achievement.

Collaborates with other staff members in planning to ensure quality of health care provided to students.

Assists students, families, and school personnel to achieve optimal levels of wellness through health education.

Assumes responsibility for continuing education and professional development and contributes to the professional growth of others.

Participates with others in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating school health and community services that include primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.

Contributes to nursing and school health through innovations in theory and practice and participation in research.

Other duties as assigned by the Coordinator of Health Services.
