Overview of Position
A SmartLab is a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) learning environment where students will explore interests in robotics, circuitry, graphic design, engineering, video production, etc. SmartLabs are project-based, student-centered learning communities where the emphasis is on students to learn, not on the teacher to teach. For this reason, teaching professionals in a SmartLab are called "Facilitators" reflecting their primary role in facilitating learning.

TRAINING NOTE- We hope to send our New SmartLab Facilitator to the Creative Learning Systems Advanced Facilitators Development Conference (AFDC) in Jenks, OK, June 24-27th, 2019.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Exhibit high energy, excitement, creativity, and genuine interest in the progress of their students.Coach and challenge students on the use of lab hardware and software, guide students through completion of the projects, and grade completed projects based on developed rubrics.Be an advocate of the program and will work with faculty members, students, and parents on the capabilities and use of the SmartLab.Aid in the research, implementation, training, and support of instructional technology in the SmartLab and in the Flagstaff Academy classrooms.Exhibit excellent classroom management skills in a highly-individualized, adaptable, and multi-tasked with multiple learning activities taking place simultaneously.Excellent organizational skills to manage classroom resources, technology, and scheduling.Ability to communicate effectively with administration, school board, students, parents, community and industry. Seeks opportunities to promote their SmartLab environment through co-facilitating, media, conferences, shows, fairs, training seminars, etc.Ability to handle visits from tour groups of all kinds including the news media.Encourages true cross-curriculum integration through collaboration with instructors of other disciplines. Invites other classes/subject matter/teachers into lab. Ability to work within an open lab environment. Promotes district/school wide cooperation.Is progressive, strives to improve and upgrade the program to keep up with the ever-changing world of technology. Grows with the changes and adapts the environment as technology improves. Keeps up-to-date by reading professional journals, attending technology conferences, and using a variety of online services.

Facilitators will need to know:
  • Basic desktop navigation on a Macintosh and/or Windows computerSave, transfer and print files over a computer networkUse word processing softwareBasic use of the internet as a technical support toolUse the FIND command to locate lost filesBe familiar with the computer's HELP and tutorial systemsGoogle Docs for EducationThe facilitator is not expected to know all of the SmartLab technology before starting the position. There will be a training period and ongoing support for the facilitator on both the technology and the curriculum.

Facilitators will be expected to learn:
  • A variety of application software packages and their purpose in the learning environmentCan install and configure software on both the Macintosh and Windows operating platformOperating system setup and managementUnderstand how to backup and restore data filesManagement of the environment file server and student accountsCreating back-ups of student work

Experience with the following is preferred:
  • Basic Science, Technology, Engineering and Math principles.Spheros, Bee Bots, ZomeToolsComputer programming including Code Combat, TynkerBasic website design principlesRobotics
