Like any chief marketing officer, you will gather market intelligence, leverage the most effective distribution networks available, craft and tailor marketing strategies to drive revenue and individual site and schoolwide implementations, and achieve organizational growth, expansion, and retention objectives. You will ensure that the organization’s messages are distributed across the proper channels, networks, and targeted audiences as well as seek out the most effective message delivery platforms (digital media, social media, mobile devices, F2F engagement) that will ensure audience adoption. As a member of the Senior Leadership team, the Senior Director of Marketing and Business Development works from the San Diego headquarters to provide marketing, engagement, communications, and development leadership direction.

Essential Duties:

  • Create an effective communications and public relations program by developing all advertising, marketing communications, brand, and public relations strategies that support the overall organizational goals, strategic partner engagement objectives, and membership growth and profitability targets
  • Provide influence and support to Senior Divisional Directors and field sales and implementation support staff in developing and executing a robust partner engagement plan for growth in existing and new markets
  • Grow AVID’s business nationally and achieve targeted revenue and membership goals to assure alignment with strategies for specific, targeted segments within a market
  • Build a high-performing Marketing and Communications team
  • Partner with Senior Division Directors to build high-performing Partner Engagement teams
  • Own the AVID brand, including market positioning, strategy, and target messaging
  • Establish critical relationships and represent AVID as the headquarters’ senior marketing executive to current and prospective client sites
  • Provide matrixed management to the field team of Partner Engagement Managers
  • Manage and lead market assessments, including market environments, competitive intelligence, and forecasting educational/market trends
  • Produce a disciplined and accurate approach to membership forecasts and achieve growth targets
  • Lead social media, interactive, and digital efforts, including ownership of the AVID website
  • Provide strategic direction and implementation management for AVID Showcases, events, and conferences, including AVID’s own Summer Institute, and provide input into the development and/or enhancement of new AVID solutions and core competencies
  • Manage development and the grant writing process
  • Support Legislative and Government Affairs activities
  • Identify or create ideas for alliances

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Strong systems thinking skills; a sense maker and thought partner, who challenges the status quo and can see the implications of the parts on the whole
  • Demonstrated ability in building and developing a highly effective Marketing team
  • Proven track record in coaching or managing a staff of seasoned marketing and communications professionals
  • Demonstrated experience in management of the full life cycle of product/solution development, price, promotion, and placement in execution of a successful sales strategy
  • Proven experience working across functional lines of an organization to deliver on client expectations
  • Demonstrated expertise in strategy formulation, market research, sales management, and communications
  • Excellent creative and analytical problem-solving skills
  • Strong entrepreneurial style and client focus
  • Proven leadership in driving needed administrative, internal functions in support of the client
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to develop partnerships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Passionate about education and positively impacting the lives of students
  • Ability to credibly influence decision makers to take action on recommendations
  • Travel up to 10% of time
  • Ability to translate our current value proposition messaging into impact and outcome-based data
  • Ability to understand partner objectives and perspectives across the vertical and horizontal school system hierarchy
  • Proven track record of creating messaging that drives desired thinking, feelings, action, and results
  • Proven track record of analyzing, interpreting, and measuring customer data and perspective (market intelligence)
  • Has an eye for how we tell our story visually (multimedia messaging and communication)
  • Strong public presentation skills (impactful storyteller)
  • Deep knowledge and expertise with marketing automation and utilization of Salesforce CRM system

Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business, or a related field; graduate degree or executive graduate work is preferred
  • Minimum 15 years of broad experience in several of the following areas, with at least 5 years in a significant marketing or partner engagement leadership role: new business development, marketing, strategic planning, partner engagement, sales management, and/or communications
  • Experience working in the education sector is desired
