Description:

Literacy coaching provides powerful job-embedded ongoing professional development with a primary goal of enhancing classroom literacy instruction through improving teacher expertise. Literacy coaches are first and foremost excellent teachers who understand how children learn and know how to create an environment that meets students' instructional and social-emotional needs. Coaches will support staff in the implementation of the district's literacy program by working directly with teachers, providing classroom-based demonstrations, collaborative and one-on-one support, and facilitating teacher inquiry and related professional development. The Coach will focus on enhancing teachers' ability to provide instruction that builds students' sense of engagement in the ownership of learning. The Coach will also work with administrators and teachers to collect and analyze data, interpret, and use it to guide instructional decisions. Effective Literacy Coaches:
  • understand reading.
    They are strongly knowledgeable of current reading research, Common Core reading standards, and reading assessments. They have teaching and/or coaching experience with reading and writing workshop through the use of Units of Study.understand pedagogy.
    They are familiar with best practices in balanced literacy instruction specifically related to reading and writing workshop, have a collection of effective strategies to draw upon, and know how to manage a classroom of diverse learners so that the learning needs of individual students are addressed. They know that students learn in engaging environments, and know how to create and sustain this type of classroom.understand coaching.
    They know how to help other teachers learn, experiment, and apply new knowledge. They know how to facilitate meetings, use questioning strategies, and offer support. They do not simply share information with teachers, but instead work collaboratively with teachers to learn new information and strategies together. They have working knowledge of adult learning theories and a keen sense of relationship building through emotional, professional and collegial support.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide direct coaching and instructional guidance to classroom teachersSupport staff awareness and working knowledge of the Common Core State Standards in ELA, Reading and Writing Workshop Balanced Literacy models, and available instructional material/ resourcesSupport classroom teachers towards the full implementation of key components of a comprehensive approach to literacyBe knowledgeable of and be prepared to model effective use of differentiated instructional strategies for diverse learnersBe familiar with and be able to articulate the essential components of effective reading, writing and oral development instructionKnowledge of administrating, analyzing, and using the results of reading assessmentsDevelop classroom teacher ability to differentiate instruction to meet individualized student needs as determined by diagnostic and formative assessment dataSupport the integration of educational technology to support literacy outcomesDesign, implement, and coordinate professional development of the adopted core and intervention curriculums, use of effective teaching strategies that support increased student achievement, and use of range of balanced assessments to inform instructionFacilitate teacher work groups/common planning time or grade level team/job-alike meetings and incorporate looking at student work or data in order to adjust instructionParticipate in the regular meetings of school-based teams and district network of Literacy Coaches for additional training and supportDevelop and provide additional communication and engagement opportunities for parents/families to better understand shifts in school/ classroom instructional practices and recommendations for supporting student learning outside of schoolWork with principals or designated administrators to communicate the role and function of the Literacy Coach in supporting the professional learning goals of administrators, teachers, and support staff.

Qualifications:
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator's License (PEL);At least 4 years of teaching experience;Strong knowledge of balanced literacy practices and structure of reading and writing workshop;Demonstration of exemplary balanced literacy instructional practices;Strong understanding of children's literacy development;Knowledge of best education and pedagogical practices;Demonstration of leadership skills in curriculum and instruction;Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships and work collaboratively with school and district personnel;Knowledge of adult learning characteristics and effective professional learning;Ability to coordinate and facilitate professional learning experiences for colleagues at the building and district levels;Strong organizational and problem solving skills;Effective verbal and written communication skills

Working Conditions:
Full-time (1.0 FTE) position. Term to include Teacher School Year + 10 additional days.
