Boston Public Schools seeks a Director, K-12 Science & Technology/Engineering

Status: Full-time
Terms: BASAS, Grade 12B, 225 day position.

Reports to: Deputy of Academics and Professional Learning

Science is critical to the teaching and learning that will prepare our students to be the innovators, problem solvers and leaders of today and tomorrow. Boston Public Schools is looking for an experienced educator or administrator who is prepared to work toward expanding science teaching and learning opportunities and access in the Boston Public Schools. The Director of BPS K-12 Science & Technology/Engineering Office of Academics and Professional Learning works directly for the Deputy Chief of Academics and Professional Learning and is responsible for supporting science instruction across the district by developing evidence-based guidance and materials, including tools, resources, and curriculum in instruction across all science subjects and grade levels.

The Director of K-12 Science and Technology/Engineering (STE) will work collaboratively with school leaders, teachers and district staff in regards to Science and Technology/Engineering content in the district. Among other matters, the K-12 STE Director will lead professional learning and development of system-wide Science and Technology/Engineering policy and program development, will oversee the planning and delivery of related professional development, and coordinate systemic efforts with local and national partners to improve Science and Technology/Engineering content instruction in the district. The Director of K-12 STE will assist in coordinating the implementation of the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework/content standards; will be responsible for providing leadership and support of all curriculum, assessment, science materials management, and professional development in STE curriculum with teachers, principals and networks for all schools K-12. In addition, they will establish the expectations of high quality professional learning based on adult learning principles. To achieve these goals, the Director will have clear milestones and identified data for monitoring the impact on student performance, as well as teaching and learning.

Responsibilities:
The Director of K-12 Science and Technology/Engineering is responsible for the following:

• Oversee the work of the Science and Technology/Engineering Department and other experts to create and coordinate curricular resources, assessments, and monitoring tools to increase the capacity of every school in the district K-12;
• Set system-wide goals for achievement in Science and Technology/Engineering including a comprehensive PK-12 curricular sequence aligned with the Massachusetts Framework (MACF) in Science and Technology/Engineering;
• Supervise and evaluate the implementation of Science and Technology/Engineering curriculum and instruction in schools in all networks, and ensures PK-12 continuity;
• Lead efforts to develop a system of monitoring and assessing the creation, delivery, dissemination, and monitoring of high quality curricular materials and assessments PK-12 in relation to Science and Technology/Engineering student achievement;
• Supports efforts of the Office of Academics and Professional Learning by providing system-wide priorities and policies as they relate to full implementation of the Science and Technology/Engineering Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, and college, career and life readiness skills;
• Provide leadership in setting system-wide priorities and policies for educational and personnel issues as they relate to Science and Technology/Engineering instruction;
• Ensure equity and access to science and technology/engineering learning opportunities for all students;
• Provide data-driven leadership in developing and in improving existing STE instructional programs/initiatives;
• Supervise the distribution, collection, refurbishment, and inventory of the Science Materials Center and its staff, providing supports and hands-on science materials to nearly 100 schools, grades K-8 (approximately 10,000 boxes/year);
• Supervise and evaluate of all Science and Technology/Engineering department staff to support the teaching of Science and Technology/Engineering as part of the Academics office, including Assistant Director and Technicians, as well as supporting school leaders in the evaluation process, providing content expertise, as needed;
• Oversee the development of vertically aligned, standards-based curricular resources, district formative and summative assessments, and professional development that integrate culturally and linguistically sustaining practices to strengthen STE teaching and learning;
• Facilitate community collaborations and events that align with the Boston Public Schools vision of academic success and support full implementation of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks;
• Identify, secure and manage grants and partnerships to support and enhance Science and Technology/Engineering instruction in all schools;
• Communicate the district- and STE priorities and implementation plans with principals, teachers, families, and other community stakeholders;
• Coordinate with ASSET and other departments (e.g. OELL, SELWell, content departments, OIIT, etc.) in the creation of resources and supports that strengthen STE teaching and learning;
• Performs other duties as required by Deputy Chief of Academics and Professional Learning.

Qualifications - Required:

• Masters degree in related field;
• Hold a valid Massachusetts teaching license in a science content area and must have or be able and willing to attain a Coordinator/Supervisor license in Science;
• Must have or be able and willing to attain SEI endorsement;
• At least 5 years elementary or secondary teaching experience;
• Possess a minimum of three years of a leadership in a school district, school, or organization, with experience establishing systems in schools and/or management experience in education strategy development and implementation;
• Deep knowledge of the 2016 MA Curriculum Framework in Science and Technology/Engineering and the implications of the shifts in content, PK-l2 including representation of diverse perspectives;
• Knowledge of adult learning theory and demonstrated success in developing and providing professional development in curriculum and instructional strategies;
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with partners to meet the goals of district-wide initiatives;
• Demonstrated leadership in content and system-wide reform;
• Demonstrated ability to assess curricular resources for instructional quality, standards alignment, and representation of diverse perspectives in the content area;
• Interpersonal skills to work with principals, teachers, coaches and network superintendents to clearly communicate and implement district wide MACF aligned curricula and programming;
• Excellent technological skills to work efficiently and effectively;
• Experience analyzing data and using data to drive instructional planning;
• Exemplary organizational and communication (oral and written) skills;
• Experience with grant and budget management;
• Current authorization to work in the United States. Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.
