Department Description:

The Adapted Physical Education Teacher is responsible for planning, monitoring and implementing a quality Physical Education program in alignment with Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and Prince George's County Public Schools Physical Education/Adapted Physical Education curriculum with appropriate accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities.

This is a 10 month Unit I PGCEA position - Pay Table A

Salary Range: $47,781 - $103,819

Detailed Description:

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Providing adapted physical education (APE) instruction to pre-school, elementary, middle and high school students with disabilities;
  • Providing community based recreation/leisure instruction to students with disabilities;
  • Providing students with disabilities with the skills and knowledge needed to participate in community based sports, recreation and leisure programs/activities;
  • Providing basic instruction in health/fitness related areas: muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance and nutrition;
  • Administering standardized APE assessments to determine eligibility of APE services;
  • Participating in school based Individual Education Plan (IEP) teams, including the development and implementation of student IEPs;
  • Writing appropriate APE student IEP goals and objectives;
  • Collecting data verifying student progress regarding the acquisition of locomotor, object control, team sports and physical fitness skills;
  • Completing IEP progress reports and report card grades for students receiving adapted physical education services;
  • Completing and submitting student physical fitness test data to the APE office;
  • Participating in the Tran disciplinary team model at early childhood programs and regional schools;
  • Participating in the planning and implementation of MSA and ALT-MSA student objectives;
  • Providing monitor and consult services on behalf of students with disabilities participating in general physical education programs;
  • Assisting with the development of APE 504 plans;
  • Collaborating closely with related service providers;
  • Providing program modifications and accommodations to ensure students with disabilities can access the general physical education program; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to modify equipment to meet the individual needs of students;
  • Ability to modify environment to meet the individual needs of students;
  • Knowledge and understanding of a variety of disabilities;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the IEP process;
  • Knowledge of Special Education policies and procedures;
  • Knowledge in administering and interpreting gross motor assessments;
  • Knowledge in child development;
  • Knowledge in Adapted Physical Education instructional best practices; and
  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Bachelor's degree, Master's preferred, from an accredited college or university preferred in Physical Education; completed undergraduate program in physical education and received a passing grade in a 3-credit Adapted Physical Education or Special Education course OR Bachelor's degree in Special Education and has passed the Physical Education Praxis II; experience working with individuals with disabilities.

    CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Holds a Maryland State physical education teaching certificate; National Certification in adapted physical education through the Adapted Physical Education National Standards (APENS) program preferred.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    No direct supervisory responsibilities.
