Head of School

Sandy Spring Friends School (SSFS) invites nominations and applications for the position of Head of School.

Sandy Spring Friends School is a progressive, coeducational, college preparatory Quaker school for students from age 3 through 12th grade, with optional boarding programs in the Middle and Upper Schools. The SSFS community is guided by the Quaker values of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship (known collectively as SPICES). Founded in 1961, SSFS offers an advanced curriculum, character education rooted in universal Quaker principles, and a diverse and international student body that reflects today's global community. The school’s motto, "Let Your Lives Speak," expresses the institution’s philosophy of educating all aspects of a person so that their life—in all its facets—can reveal the unique strengths within.

Set on a pastoral 140-acre campus in the heart of Montgomery County, Maryland, SSFS is equidistant from Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Annapolis. The campus features 14 buildings including a state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center and 60-bed dorm, as well as solar arrays, a community farm, an aerial adventure park, and miles of hiking trails. A new Upper School Building, currently being constructed using the new International Green Construction Code, is expected to be completed and “net zero ready” in 2020.

Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the next Head of School will be responsible for providing the leadership and vision to advance the school’s mission to develop individual talents and foster caring and effective citizens of the world. Managing an annual operating budget of approximately $21 million, the Head of School will lead Sandy Spring Friends School’s 150 talented faculty and staff members who are dedicated to supporting the school’s 622 students, while overseeing the academic program, strategic planning efforts, and fundraising opportunities, with a focus on building endowment. The most qualified candidate will be an accomplished and visionary leader with strong communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse constituent groups. That candidate will also have experience in securing resources in support of a mission-driven institution, a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, and a willingness to embrace the Quaker values of the school.
