Charlestown High School (CHS) is an open-enrollment high school in Boston that serves almost 900 students from across the city. Located in the historic neighborhood of Charlestown along the MBTA Orange Line, CHS is organized into five Small Learning Communities, each of which is designed for a specific population of students.

Job Description

The School Culture & Climate Manager will play a critical role in improving student performance at Charlestown High School by ensuring our school maintains a positive learning environment and a culture of high expectations. The person in this role will also collaborate with school staff to support the implementation of strategies and programs designed to improve culture and climate including creating and deploying a restorative practices program for managing student accountability.

(S)he will develop a system for school staff to implement restorative practices, regularly monitor school culture and climate, and work to ensure that the school is safe. This is a full-time position responsible for creating behavior systems, protocols and consequences in conjunction with the principal. He or she will develop a strong rapport with students and maintain behavior systems created to support students struggling with behavior. In addition, the behavior specialist will provide critical support to teachers and administrators during breakfast, lunch and dismissal.

REPORTS TO: Principal and/or Designee

Responsibilities of the School Culture & Climate Manager include, but are not limited to:

  1. Build rapport with students who need behavioral support, checking in with students daily and writing notes to parents providing them with updates
  2. Manage and align school community on school culture expectations including interventions, discipline and incentives
  3. Create and maintain growth plans and tracking charts for individual students who need special attention, in partnership with the principal or designee
  4. Review data and assist in developing strategies for decreasing number of behavioral incidents.
  5. Develop and maintain a behavior system that supports students who have been temporarily removed from their classes due to poor behavior, following protocols established by the school's leadership team (e.g., bringing students to a quiet room or space and monitoring student as he/she works; calling the parent; documenting the behavior; removing and escorting student back to class, etc.)
  6. Facilitate Restorative Justice circles whenever necessary.
  7. Provide administrative support at critical times of the day, such as morning arrival, breakfast, lunch and dismissal.
  8. Invest parents and families in their children's academic success through regular communication of success and challenges
  9. Reflect on successes and areas of growth around all areas; seek to improve performance; receive feedback eagerly
  10. Collaborate with colleagues to ensure a rigorous, joyful, and safe environment
  11. Continue to seek and build new partnerships, with a focus on maximizing resources
  12. Assume responsibility for every single scholar's success by holding all students accountable during transitions, breakfast, lunch, arrival, dismissal, testing etc.
  13. Maintain data entry into SIS and other databases
  14. Work in house and with BPS transportation department to handle any discipline on bus/ mbta or walking home
  15. Work with appropriate staff at the school in revising staff and student handbooks.
  16. Work with appropriate staff at the school to create and distribute the school safety plan
  17. Create and maintain an after school academic assistance program to improve student academic outcomes.
  18. Performs other responsibilities as requested by the Principal

QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment
  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least 2-3 years experience managing adolescent programs and data collection
  • At least 3 years experience in urban school system working with a diverse ethnic student body
  • Demonstrated passion for and commitment to Charlestown High School's mission, core values and educational model
  • Commitment to the success of all Charlestown High School students
  • Flexible and able to multi-task; can work within an ambiguous, fast-moving environment, while also driving toward clarity and solutions
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities and guiding investment in people and systems
  • Willingness to work autonomously, collaboratively, and/or under the direction of senior staff, as needed
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and Google Drive Suite
  • Comfort and familiarity with student information databases (Aspen, SIS, etc)

Terms:
Managerial Tier B

Note:
School-based Managerial employees will work 223 days each year. The 223 day work-year will include the 180 days in which school is in session, and the additional days will be determined by the employee and the principal or headmaster of the school.

School-based Managerial employees are not eligible for vacation time or compensatory time. In the event of school cancellation due to snow or inclement weather, school-based Managerial employees need not report to work.
