About the Cities Experience Program
The Whittle Cities Experience Program (CEP) is a groundbreaking global exchange experience designed to immerse a select number of our middle and high school students in the host cities for our first campuses: Shenzhen, Washington DC and New York City. Students will begin their school year in Shenzhen, building the scholarly and personal skills necessary to navigate, study and interact with the world's great cities. They will then deploy those new skills, travelling to Washington DC and New York City for deep, immersive learning experiences, returning to Shenzhen between trips to ensure that they master the necessary skills and to solidify the insights and discoveries they will take with them into their future studies. A team of highly trained middle and high school teachers form all disciplines will work with the students across all three campuses to ensure that students cover the required material thoroughly and master the skills they need to navigate the three cites successfully and safely.
Position Overview

Our emphasis on project- and place-based learning encourages students to weave connections among the academic, social, and emotional threads of their learning.   As a member of an interdisciplinary instructional team that employs project-based, personalized, multi-disciplinary, inquiry-based approaches to teaching and learning, the STEM Teacher will facilitate student understanding of our increasingly interdependent world. Experience with and commitment to teaching interdisciplinary content across the discipline are key components of this position.  In addition, the STEM Teacher will:

  • seek to engage with students and the greater Whittle community both inside and outside the classroom in a variety of ways
Responsibilities
We believe all children are naturally curious and born to be great thinkers, forming meaning from interactions with family, peers, teachers, and community. Core responsibilities of all faculty members are described below, organized loosely by three areas of the Whittle Ideal Candidate: (1) Core Curriculum (World of Knowledge), (2) Global Perspectives (World of Humanity), and (3) Personalized Pathways (World of Self), as well as those responsibilities expected as a member of a collaborative, professional learning community.
The CEP team will work closely across disciplines to create a supportive, challenging and meaningful learning experience for 60-80 students from grades 6-10 who will be based in Shenzhen and travel together to New York City and Washington, DC. Beyond having mastery in their subject area, CEP teachers will need to be excellent collaborators, mentors and guides, looking out for the social, emotional and physical well-being of student in the classroom, in the dorms, in the city and in transit.
The CEP Staffing Model
A team of highly trained middle and high school teachers will work with the students across all three campuses to ensure that students cover the required material thoroughly and master the skills they need to navigate the three cites successfully and safely. These teachers will have deep mastery in specific areas of academic content: STEM, Humanities, Arts, Math and Language, and be trained in experiential learning, global studies, global rotation and best practices in expeditionary learning. They will inspire student to master content deeply and skills thoroughly, while also making sure students are safe, happy and supported.
All CEP teachers will follow the CEP students from Shenzhen to Washington DC and to New York City and will reside in the dorms while abroad.
The CEP teacher team will work across grade levels, with support from the local teachers in Shenzhen and Washington DC.
  • 7 th and 8 th graders will be integrated into the mainstream classes in Shenzhen and DC, working with the CEP teacher team on both basic skills and enrichment after school, on X-Days and on weekends.
  • 9 th and 10 th graders will study with the CEP teacher team during the school day and have enrichment activities in the evenings and on weekends.
  • CEP students will join mainstream classes for performing arts
Qualifications and Attributes

Content and Education Expertise
  • Bachelor's degree BA/BS in specific field or post graduate work in subject matter required. Possible areas of study include:
    • Earth Science, Ecology, Environmental Science, Geology, Physical Science, Physics
  • Master's level degree or above in the listed content area preferred
  • Linguistic proficiency in Mandarin Chinese highly desirable
  • Minimum 3 years of teaching experience, preferably in an independent school environment
