Summary: The Executive Director is the sole employee of the Board of Trustees and is responsible for the overall management of the school, in accordance with the Board's policies. The Executive Director will lead a school that is committed to the ongoing development and well-being of its students, teachers and staff. The Executive Director will provide strategic and instructional leadership and will oversee management of the day-to-day operations of the school. The Executive Director has ultimate and overall responsibility for Board relations, curriculum and instruction, business affairs, admissions, advancement and external relations including civic engagement. Ultimately, the Executive Director is responsible for protecting and implementing the mission of the school and fulfilling the terms of its charter with the State of New York with a specific emphasis on maximizing academic outcomes.

Duties and Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Executive Director include, but are not limited to these tasks:

  • Provide strategic, academic leadership for school improvement and development so that the school fulfills the academic goals and performance indicators as specified with its charter with the State of New York.

  • Keep the Board informed of all matters relating to the school through reports at Board meetings and immediate communication following major school events or programs.


  • Attend and participate in all Board and Board committee meetings.

  • Ensure and exemplify high academic and ethical standards and expectations for all students, faculty and staff.


  • Ensure an orderly, motivational and aspirational culture and a strong school community where teaching, learning and healthy relationships can thrive.
  • Ensure responsive and effective management systems and management such that all students, parents, teachers and staff are well supported.

  • Jointly with the board, establish annual goals for performance evaluations.

  • Oversee and collaborate with the Director of Finance and the Board Finance Committee in the development of the school budget and long-term financial planning.

  • Coordinate with the Director of Finance on purchasing, payroll, human resources, and payroll as necessary.
  • Supervise and assist the admissions function of the school, including recruitment programs and marketing efforts.

  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communication within the school community - from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a precise brand identity and presence.

  • Ensure that personnel evaluation procedures are accomplished in a fair and consistent manner that encourages accountability, growth and excellence, in accordance with law, Board policy, and contractual requirements.
  • Remain up-to-date on current educational and charter school developments and innovations to educate staff and board members as necessary on relevant issues and challenges in education and charter schools.
  • Oversee and approve all state reporting and Charter Schools Institute reporting.
  • Take responsibility for Charter Schools Institute Accountability Plan.
  • Represent the school to the Charter Schools Institute.
  • Represent the school in all external affairs.
  • Embody the mission and spirit of the King Center Charter School with authenticity.
Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing, communication, organizational development, and community-building skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership in working with a charter authorizing agency, professional staff, students, and the community.
  • Ability to interpret and act on educational data.
  • Passionate belief in and understanding of college and post-secondary preparation, access and success for all students;
  • 3-5 years of experience as a school leader (Executive Director or Vice-Executive Director preferred) with significant areas of responsibility.
  • Demonstrated achievement in increasing school-wide student academic performance measures.
  • Urban School setting experience preferred with a demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the specific circumstances of families and youth who live in urban, low-income communities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in educational settings.
  • MA or MEd required
  • NYS School District Administrator or School Building Leader certification preferred.
  • Primary and middle school expertise preferred.
