    Employment Term: 10 months/Full-Time

    Summary: The Elementary Literacy Coach is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing a comprehensive school wide literacy program which facilitates learning; for modeling of best practices lessons which use literacy-based learning strategies; for coaching teachers in all curriculum areas on how to enhance students' literacy skills; for identifying staff development needs of the school and for providing staff professional development and study groups related to literacy as part of the problem solving process; for analyzing and utilizing student assessment data to improve student literacy; and for working with school and community groups to help all students reach their highest potential.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the PA Common Core Standards. Knowledge of reading curricula, evidence based reading research programs and materials, current technology as it relates to reading programs, materials and assessments. Knowledge of learning styles, instructional strategies and varied teaching methods. Knowledge of current trends, evidence based reading research, and best practices related to reading instruction. Ability to communicate orally and in writing with adults and students. Ability to effectively assess levels of student achievement, analyze test results and prescribe actions for improvement. Ability to plan, establish priorities, implement and conduct staff development activities for maximum effectiveness based on differentiated teacher needs.

    Primary Functions:
    • Serve as a literacy leader in the school, sharing knowledge of pedagogy, current research and best practices in literacy with faculty and community stakeholders; shares reading resources with teachers, paraprofessionals, and parents
    • Coach teachers for the purpose of improving literacy instruction and promoting a school-based professional learning community.
    • Co-plans, co-teaches and models research based instructional approaches.
    • Coaches teachers on best practices for literacy instruction and for infusing literacy instruction in all content areas
    • Assesses skills and needs (both initially and ongoing) of teachers for the purpose of determining the kinds of professional development and strategies needed to bring about student achievement and gains in reading and writing across all content areas.
    • Maintains a variety of manual and electronic files and/or records for the purpose of determining success of literacy coaching on student achievement and evaluating effectiveness of the overall literacy program.
    • Conducts professional development workshops for staff on research-based instructional strategies to improve reading, writing, listening and speaking skills of students. Guides teachers in effective intervention planning and implementation.
    • Assists in the administration of reading assessments
    • Analyzes data, utilizes data to inform decisions related to literacy throughout the school. Utilizes data to plan and implement effective intervention and enrichment activities for students, and to guide professional development efforts with teachers.
    • Plans and/or facilitates family literacy activities
    • Works collaboratively with the administrators and teachers to ensure the literacy curriculum remains current and reflects the needs of our students.
    • Becomes an integral part of the school's RTII process to ensure effective instructional strategies and support for students.
    • Maintains respectful and positive relations with colleagues, administrators, and staff; inspires trust and respect; maintains a positive attitude at all times; adheres to school policies and practices; meets attendance and punctuality guidelines, and demonstrates a total commitment to the organization and to excellence.
    • Other duties as assigned.
    Requirements:
    1. Educational Level: Bachelor Degree required; Master Degree preferred
    2. Certification/License Required: Valid Pennsylvania Teaching Certificate
    3. Experience: Minimum of 5 years classroom teaching experience required at the Kindergarten through sixth grade; Extensive experience with delivering professional development, teaching across multiple grade levels, and coaching preferred.
