MATH  TEACHING ASSISTANT

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Teaching Assistants will work closely with the lead teachers to plan and deliver meaningful learning experiences, create opportunities for maximum educational and social development. Teacher Assistants will work with all members of the school community to create a nurturing and structured environment for each student enrolled at New Heights Academy Charter School.

Middle School Principal

COLLABORATES WITH

Middle School Teachers, Coaches, Teaching Assistants, and Grade Teams

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT

10 months

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associates’ Degree in education or mathematics
  • NYS Teaching Assistant certification preferred
  • Prior experience with children ages 9-13
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; bilingual (English/Spanish) skills a plus
  • Working knowledge of basic computer skills (word processing, internet, email, etc.)

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with small groups of students to assist in mathematics
  • Teach, review, and reinforce academic content
  • Keep accurate & organized records of student information
  • Support in student behavioral management and de-escalating challenging student behaviors
  • Collaborate with families and staff to support student learning
  • Ensure the safety of students at all times
  • Assist with creating and implementing developmentally appropriate lesson plans
  • Supervise students in and out of classroom as needed - this may include but is not limited to - moving students to proper locations during fire drills, lunch and recess duty, enrichment activities/classes, etc.
  • Administrative, task-based support for teachers and operations staff
  • Assist in classroom set-up and logistics – prepping student materials or manipulatives, classroom beautification and maintenance, etc.
  • Additional responsibilities to meet the needs of our students

  • Provide appropriate and effective learning experiences for pupils from a wide range achievement levels
  • Provide a motivating and stimulating learning environment under the guidance of the lead teacher
  • Follow safety procedures and written and verbal instructions
  • Make collaborative decisions with lead teachers
  • Work autonomously within school established guidelines and policies
  • Organize tasks, set priorities and meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks
  • Demonstrate good judgment and good problem-solving skills
  • Direct and instruct students
  • Respond appropriately to evaluation and changes in the work setting
