Office of SELWell Overview:
The mission of SELWell is to build the capacity of schools, while eliminating inequities, to improve the social, emotional, and physical skills and knowledge of all students to support their healthy development, readiness to learn, and preparedness for life.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Executive Director (ED) of SELWell Curriculum, Instruction, & Wellness (CI&W) resides in the Office of SELWell within the ASSET Division of the Boston Public Schools, reporting to the Assistant Superintendent of SELWell. The Executive Director of SELWell CI&W provides direct oversight for all of the SELWell Curriculum, Instruction, & Wellness departments and programs including: Athletics (ATH), Health & Wellness Department (HWD)-Physical Education, Physical Activity, Health Education, Wellness Council Supports & Wellness Promotions; Social Emotional Learning & Instruction (SEL&I); and Restorative Practices, and in collaboration with the Assistant Superintendent, SELWell and the Executive Director of SELWell Services is responsible for providing leadership and management of SELWell's overall strategic initiatives. (S)he will be responsible for engaging directors, school leaders and partners in: strategic thinking and policy development; curation and refinement of effective instructional practices; development and implementation of curriculum, tools and resources, and determining the mechanisms for ensuring services are effectively deployed and monitored using data while being aligned with SELWell, ASSET and District goals to advance the mission of the Boston Public Schools. The position will have a particular emphasis on building organizational and SELWell staff capacity and building effective teams and systems. The Executive Director of SELWell CI&W will serve in a senior role within the Office of SELWell. (S)he will have deep knowledge of curriculum, instruction and instructional coaching and a demonstrated ability to manage many complex departments or areas of work with regard to effectively implementing short and long term solutions through exceptional problem solving and communication skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES :
SELWell Leadership and Strategic Management
  • Collaborate with SELWell senior leaders, including the Assistant Superintendent and Executive Director, SELWell Services to develop and implement strategic initiatives, district policies, and best practices.
  • Build the capacity of the SELWell leadership team (All SELWell Directors) through collaboration on professional development.
  • Lead or contribute on district and community stakeholder teams as assigned
  • Initiate and engage in strategic partnerships to advance BPS' SELWell delivery of curriculum and instruction.
  • Represent BPS and the Assistant Superintendent, SELWell at key meetings, convenings, and other events (local, state, national).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent, SELWell.

SELWell Curriculum, Instruction, & Wellness Unit Management
  • Lead BPS' strategy for SELWell Curriculum, Instruction, & Wellness and provide direct oversight, management, and approvals for: implementation of BPS Learning Standards for K-12 Physical Education, Health Education and Social Emotional Learning; instructional coaching, restorative practices, athletics programming and physical activity practices; Health and Wellness Department and other SELWell CI&W program areas operations: work plans, financial resources, communications, grants, partnerships.
  • Build unit/team capacity; implement effective teaming structures for collaboration to share best practices across program areas and to improve overall quality and alignment of professional development and instruction delivery.
  • Ensure close collaboration of SELWell CI&W with: SELWell Services, Academic Superintendents and all ASSET Academic department leads and the Offices of Special Education, ELL, Opportunity Gap, Equity, Operations and school administrators to implement the curricular areas of the Wellness Policy at the district and school level.
  • Remain abreast of current best practices, laws, regulations, policies/procedures and national organizational standards in physical education, health education, social emotional learning curriculum, restorative practices, athletics, physical activity practices and public health.
Staff Management
  • Hire, supervise, onboard, develop and evaluate the Director of Physical Education, the Director of Health Education, the Director of SEL & Instruction, the Senior Director of Athletics, and the Restorative Justice Instructional Coach and others as assigned. Oversee hiring of others in the CI&W Unit.
  • Enforce personnel policies and procedures to ensure consistent equity, quality and accountability.
  • Ensure timely deliverables of SELWell Curriculum, Instruction, & Wellness departments' internal and external requests.

School Communications
  • Through school visits, written communications and other modes, stay abreast of SELWell CI&W successes and challenges at schools.
  • Support directors and school leaders in curriculum and instruction implementation innovations and problem solving.

QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED :
  • Master's degree in Educational Leadership or related curricular area and Bachelors in curricular content area.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the field of education (clinical position, classroom teaching, coaching, site or district level administration and/or program implementation) in a variety of school settings or grades.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in department or program leadership, managing multiple departments/ programs and a track record of significant accomplishment, especially in complex or high need environments.
  • Expertise in curriculum development, professional development and instructional coaching.
  • Knowledge of best practices, state and federal laws, regulations, policies/procedures and state and national curricular frameworks & standards in physical education, health education, social emotional learning curriculum, and restorative practices.
  • Strong knowledge of public health and best-practice strategies for behavior changing.
  • Evidence of outstanding leadership and team building, and interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral).
  • Comfort interfacing with all levels of school and district leadership; ability to effectively engage a variety of stakeholders within BPS as well as externally.
  • Experience with grant management, financial administration, and program evaluation.
  • Experience working with culturally-linguistically diverse students, families and communities.
  • Passionate about accelerating the impact and efficacy of new teachers, mentors and school leaders, and improving the academic and health outcomes of all students.
  • Commitment to self-reflection and ongoing learning.
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment.
  • Comfort with handling multiple projects simultaneously as well as working with rapidly shifting priorities and targets.
  • Strong organizational skills,with outstanding attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs including Word, Powerpoint, and Excel; Google Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Drive.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States.
  • An understanding of and commitment to gain greater understanding of what is necessary for an urban school system to enjoy continuous improvement in an increasingly complex and competitive environment.
  • A deeply held and unyielding belief in the overarching mission of public education.

QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED :
  • Massachusetts Administrator license.
  • Principal or headmaster experience.
  • Deep knowledge of SEL competencies and learning differences frameworks.
  • Familiarity with Labor relations law and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Familiarity with Boston and Boston Public Schools.
  • Demonstrable success creating and implementing programs that contribute to student success.
  • Strong working knowledge of BPS' approach to teacher and school leader development.

Terms: Managerial Tier E. This is a non-union managerial position. Residency in the City of Boston is required at the time of hire.
