POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Project Director resides in the Office of Facilities Management within the Operations Division of the Boston Public Schools, reporting to the Assistant Director of Facilities Management. The Project Director is responsible for working to estimate, design and oversee Boston Public Schools construction and renovation projects, ensuring compliance to specifications, schedules, and deadlines. The Project Director is also responsible for coordinating all trades for these projects.

The Project Director will support the Facilities Management team to ensure safe and efficient execution of the district's infrastructure objectives in order to ensure BPS students have access to and are educated in safe and secure learning environments.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

Coordination of significant construction and facilities related projects:
  • Responsible for the oversight and coordination of projects ranging in monetary value from $250,000 to $5,000,000 requiring formal planning, including but not limited to:
  • o Estimating project costs
    o Preliminary design and drafting of plans
    o Coordinating design with specification writing in preparation for public bids
    o Maintaining relationships with all contractors working with the Boston Public Schools Facilities Management Department
Assessing school building needs and executing all necessary reports and filings:
  • Prepares technical reports and analyses as requested.
  • Visits school buildings to determine extent of building problems and submits recommendation to department engineers and Assistant Director.
Monitors ongoing challenges and contributes to development of project plans:
  • Reads and interprets existing building plans and prepares sketches.
  • Develops space planning layouts.
  • Attends capital planning and budget meetings.
  • Assists in drafting services during peak planning stages.
Responds to emergencies and executes contingency plans as needed:
  • Available, as needed, after business hours to assist in handling emergency situations.
  • Performs other responsibilities as requested by the Asst. Director and Chief Operating Officer.
QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED :
  • Associate's Degree in Architectural or Building Construction
  • Minimum of 10 years of supervisory experience in construction or facilities management.
  • Minimum of 10 years in drafting using AutoCAD
  • Knowledge of construction, contract practices, Massachusetts building code, Chapter 149 and construction regulations
  • Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License (Unrestricted)
  • Architectural Engineering Expertise
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by job
  • Proven ability to motivate staff to produce projects on time and within budget projections
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, exhibiting ability to effectively communicate with multiple stakeholders across a complex ecosystem, including school leaders, administrators, colleagues, parents, contractors, and other BPS and City of Boston departments
  • Excellent computer skills.
QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED :
  • Bachelor's Degree in Architectural or Building Construction
  • Experience in School Construction
  • Familiarity with Boston and Boston Public Schools
This is a non-union managerial position.

Terms: Managerial D, Residency in the City of Boston is required at the time of hire.
