Baltimore International Academy West (BIA West) is seeking a principal for the 2019-2020 school year. BIA West is a new public charter school, but will be a replication of Baltimore International Academy (BIA), a Baltimore City public charter school in its 12th year of operation. BIA West plans to locate at 4300 Sidehill Rd. in Southeast Baltimore City. BIA West will open in 2019-2020 with Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 6th Grade, and will expand yearly to become a Pre-K-8th Grade school.
BIA West's model will be full immersion in K-5th Grade, and partial immersion in 6-8th Grade. Up to five language tracks will be offered, contingent on student enrollment numbers: Spanish Immersion, Chinese Immersion, Arabic Immersion, Russian Immersion, and French Immersion. BIA West will also be an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, offering both the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Program (MYP).
BIA West's principal will be employed by Baltimore City Public Schools and must meet state certification requirements. The candidate should have a Master's degree in Education or a related field from an accredited college or university, and should have or be eligible for a Maryland Advanced Professional Certificate with a Principal/Superintendent or an Administrator I and II endorsement. The candidate must fully understand and support charter schools, language immersion, and International Baccalaureate. Candidates should understand the basics of Maryland charter law, which varies from other states. Fluency in Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, or French is strongly preferred, as is experience with either language immersion or IB.

The Principal is an instructional leader that is critical to the acceleration of improved student outcomes across City Schools, through the support and supervision of instructional and school support staff and collaboration with Instructional Leadership Executive Directors. The Principal represents the district as the instructional leader in the community and strives to create a culture of rigorous learning with increased outcomes for all students, rooted in the mission to eliminate disparities in achievement and to ensure college and career readiness for all students.
Leading Teacher Learning and Development
- Develops and Implements coherent systems of curriculum, instruction, and assessment that promote the mission, vision, and core values of the school, embody high expectations for student learning, align with academic standards, and are culturally responsive.
- Develops the pedagogical and programmatic plans of the school, sets key objectives and measurable benchmarks that are coherent, aligned, data-driven, and address the learning needs of all students
- Utilizes multiple data-based indicators to inform, drive change, and assess progress in instructional practices aligned to school performance goals
