Position Summary
The Arts Teacher is the sole faculty position dedicated to supporting Harlem Link's Arts program. The Arts Teacher teaches up to 30 classes a week, grades Pre-K - 5.  At Harlem Link, teachers are responsible for providing a rigorous instructional program to scholars in the service of closing the achievement gap and creating a safe, structured learning community to foster citizenship skills and higher order thinking. Teachers at Harlem Link are outcome-oriented, hardworking and receptive to feedback, putting in the time necessary to ensure scholars meet the school's high expectation for learning.
Responsibilities
Curriculum and Instruction
  • Plan units of study and lessons in the Arts
  • Provide an inviting, exciting, and innovative learning environment
  • Use materials effectively and focus lesson on objective
  • Plan assessments that match student goals and objectives and appropriate learning standards and analyze results to inform instruction
  • Keep students on task and give appropriate feedback about performance
  • Secure additional arts resources for the school through DonorsChoose, Materials for the Arts and other sources.
Classroom Management
  • Use classroom and behavioral management strategies that are structured, consistent, respectful and responsive to student needs
  • Ensure a safe physical and emotional environment for students through positive framing, kind communication with students and adults, predictability and consistent routines
  • Take responsibility for order and productivity by refusing to tolerate classroom disruptions, working with teachers to implement individual behavior plans when needed
Collaboration
  • Work with teachers to address the individual needs of students
  • Collaborate with classroom co-teachers with curriculum planning, instruction, and assessment, including supporting and enhancing performance assessments of Social Studies units
  • Meet regularly with classroom co-teachers to evaluate students' progress
  • Participate in professional learning sessions, co-planning, child-study teams, grade teams, and committee meetings
Qualifications
  • Ideal candidates have:
    • three or more years' teaching experience in Pre-K to 5 classrooms in New York City
    • clear evidence on cover letter and/or resume of student achievement in the context of an orderly, positive and inclusive classroom community.
  • Successful candidates are:
    • highly-skilled classroom managers and self-motivated learners
    • creative thinkers who take a solutions oriented approach to classroom and school challenges and
    • hard-working professionals dedicated to doing whatever it takes to close the achievement gap.
  • All candidates must have:
    • a bachelor's degree (or higher) in arts education and
    • appropriate New
    • York State teaching certification (or reciprocal certification from another state).
Timeframe and Compensation
  • This is a full-time position, with the following schedule:
    • Monday, Wednesday & Friday, 8:15 am - 3:30 pm
    • Tuesday & Thursday, 8:15 am - 5:00 pm (extended for professional learning and meetings)
  • The position will begin immediately.
  • Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience. Benefits are provided in accordance with school policy.
