Summer Session 2019 ESL Teacher

Reports To: Director of Adult Education

The Boston Public Schools Department of Adult Education is looking for an ESL teacher who understands the lives of urban adults and has a proven track record of working successfully with adult students who face academic and personal challenges.

Schedule: July 8, 2019-August 1, 2019

Teach a 64 hour intensive career related ESL class that focuses on the vocabulary and language skills required to be successful in a skills training program. 9:00-1:00 Monday through Thursday.

This stipend will cover instructional hours, prep time and meetings with Adult Education Staff.
Responsibilities:
  1. Provide individualized and small group English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction to adult English Language Learners (ELL).
  2. Identify sheltered English instructional techniques that can be implemented to support student learning of selected content.
  3. Collaborate and communicate with the schools instructional leadership team and administration to ensure ELL students receive language support and other forms of academic assistance.
  4. Administer and score pre- and post- placement tests.
  5. Maintain accurate attendance and assessment records.
  6. Model professional behavior that addresses job responsibilities, district policies and procedures, and the expectations of professionals working in a multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and economically diverse community.
  7. Demonstrate a commitment to excellence, equity, and high expectations for all students with an emphasis on building on the strengths that students bring to the teaching/learning process.
  8. Build and maintain safe, fair, and respectful learning environments that celebrate the diversity of the student population.
  9. Plan instruction and employ strategies that address the wide range of learning, behavioral, and communication styles of the student population.
  10. Demonstrate cultural proficiency and use effective and culturally relevant instructional practices.
  11. Integrate technology into the classroom as an instructional tool and for personal productivity.
  12. Perform other duties as requested by the Director.

Qualifications: (Required)
  • Bachelor's degree is required. Master's degree in education, TESOL, applied linguistics or related field strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with adult learners.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of MA DESE ESL Standards for Adults..
  • At least three (3) years teaching experience and curriculum development work.
  • Valid Massachusetts teaching certification or 10 years experience teaching ESL to adults.
  • Experience in developing and teaching ESL curriculum..
  • Excellent writing, communication and organizational skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft office applications and/or other uses forms of technology.
  • Experience in working in a fast-paced, challenging environment.

Qualifications - Preferred:
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Cape Verdean or Haitian Creole a strong plus.
  • Understanding of or willingness to learn about content related to Culinary Arts careers.
  • Experience teaching a contextualized ESL class for adults.
  • Prior work or volunteer experience with non-traditional students.
