Position Summary:

The Director of Specialized Services (DSS) is responsible for creating, implementing and monitoring site and network level special education programs and related services to support Mastery students.

Key Challenges/Major Issues

The DSS is challenged with ensuring students with different needs as determined by an IEP team are receiving the most appropriate programming and are progressing and improving significantly in that programming.

Risks and Opportunities:

Risk: The DSS will work with limited resources and without direct line management to shape and monitor school site special education programming.

Opportunity: The DSS has the opportunity to ensure that our most struggling students have the support and instruction they need to be on par with their peers in general education when appropriate.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Work closely with the network special education to develop a vision on what is world-class service for special needs students and communicate and execute that vision appropriately

Design Mastery wide special education programming and protocols

Train all relevant staff members on special education specific issues and knowledge relevant to their position

Guide and support site based Assistant Principals of Specialized Services in creating and maintaining appropriate and effective campus based and network wide special education programming that meet the needs of all students at their campus.

Create monitoring tools and consistently audit school site special education programming and provide feedback and support for improvement

Work with external organizations to provide related services and other programming for students (OT, PT, Speech, special education evaluations, nursing, transition, alternative placements, etc.

Qualifications:

Strong Knowledgeable in implementation and monitoring of specialized services programs

Minimum of 3 years of school based leadership and management experience

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Detail-oriented and highly organized with strong analytical writing skills

Has experienced a high level of measurable success working with urban youth with special needs

Ability to work well in a team and enhance cooperative working relationships

Excels in problem solving, has a sense of humor and has a desire to provide only the highest quality education for students.

Education and Experience:

Minimum of Bachelor's degree in or extensive experience in special education or working with children with special needs.

Strong administrative background that reflects strong management and communication skills

Key Competencies:

Strong facilitation, training, presentation skills, leadership, management, sound judgment and effective decision-making abilities, working technical/field knowledge, goal-oriented, strong knowledge of community resources

Physical Requirements:

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required such as traveling to network campuses and maneuvering in office space-reaching file cabinets, filing, faxing, coping, typing, mailing, and making phone calls; Must be able to sit for up to four (4) hours looking at a computer monitor, using a keyboard and mouse and typing.

Other Requirements:

Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle for travel when necessary, preferred.
