Summary of Position
Facilitate all aspects of the district's K-8 talent development and advanced learner education including Advanced Learner identification, support for levels of service, assessment, differentiation of curriculum and instruction. Develop, coordinate and deliver professional development and related services to K-8 teachers, principals and other school and district staff. Build capacity with school leadership teams and teachers to ensure academic growth for advanced learners and enrichment for all students. Provide direct support to International Baccalaureate PYP/MYP schools

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience
  1. Minnesota Teaching License, Elementary and/or Secondary
  2. Advanced degree or certificate in Gifted/Talent Development or Curriculum preferred
  3. Coursework/training in Gifted/Talented programming/services, curriculum design and delivery, formative assessment and professional development
  4. Experience in talent development and advanced learner programming/resources/teaching strategies
  5. Experience in advanced learner identification processes
  6. At least five years experience of effective instruction teaching a wide range of students from diverse backgrounds in an urban setting.
  7. Experience with curriculum development, analysis and delivery using effective formative assessment strategies
  8. Experience leading effective professional development that changes teacher practice and increases student learning outcomes.
  9. Demonstrated effective leadership and coaching skills in working with adults

  4. Strong knowledge of talent development and advanced learner education, current educational research, instructional strategies and differentiation of curriculum and instruction specifically for diverse high ability learners.
  5. Strong knowledge of the content and pedagogy needed for talent development and advanced learner education; knowledge of assessment strategies and reporting processes; knowledge of resources and appropriately differentiated materials.
  6. Knowledge of IB Programme Standards and Practices, current educational research, inquiry teaching and curriculum development in the PYP and MYP.
  7. Ability to differentiate instruction for diverse groups of learners and effectively manage a differentiated classroom.
  8. Excellent interpersonal skills; excellent oral and written communication skills.
  9. Ability to work with a wide range of constituents including students, teachers, administrators and community members.
  10. Ability to facilitate a variety of professional development experiences for staff using exemplary pedagogy and technology.
  11. Ability to work creatively and collaboratively with teams.
  12. Capacity to exhibit systems thinking and manage projects of widely varying complexity.

Position Functions, Duties, Responsibilities:
General
  1. Be a strong advocate for diverse high ability students, their parents, and teachers. When necessary, advocate for appropriate accelerated learning opportunities, both within the school and outside the school.
  2. Support site talent development leads and their administrators to develop yearly site Talent Development plans, assist schools (principals, leads and teachers) with program options
  3. Collaborate with site and district leaders to implement, sustain and improve IB Programmes within MPS.
  4. Represent MPS at local, state, national and international IB conferences and meetings.
  5. Coach and collaborate with talent development personnel and classroom teachers to improve the differentiation of curriculum and instruction for diverse high ability learners.
  6. Promote equity regarding talent development and advanced learner education services for students within and between schools
  7. Engage in issues of race regarding the opportunity and achievement gap between and among groups of students, especially for diverse high ability learners.
  8. Other duties as assigned.

Curriculum Design and Delivery
  1. Collaborate with all content areas to include enrichment and qualitative differentiation for diverse high ability learners in the development of curriculum guides for grades K-8.
  2. Support IB Coordinators in the development of effective, standards-based units of inquiry and their coaching of teachers.
  3. Support affective needs of high ability learners through appropriate curriculum, counseling, support from school and district staff.
  4. Screen and select necessary supplemental curriculum materials and resources to ensure learner outcomes are met.

Professional Development
  1. Design and lead professional development for teachers, specialists and building leaders in relevant talent development programming/strategies including qualitatively differentiated curriculum and instruction, assessment/identification, and social-emotional support.
  2. Facilitate communication and professional development for advanced differentiation specialists and IB coordinators.

Assessment
  1. Support the use a comprehensive assessment system to inform instruction in all disciplines.
  2. Support ongoing assessment/identification of high ability, high talent and high potential following district guidelines. Make particular effort to recruit and retain students from populations often underrepresented in gifted programs and who may be underachieving.
  3. Implement accountability systems and practices providing schools with data to inform decision-making and school improvement efforts for increased academic achievement.
