ABOUT THE SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT

Windy Peak Outdoor Lab School is one of two sites in the Outdoor Education Program within Jefferson County Public Schools. The Outdoor Lab Program has become a rite of passage for sixth grade students across the district building lifelong skills and memories. Windy Peak provides unique, experiential learning in nature's classroom where students develop stewardship through problem solving, team building, decision-making and social interaction.
Historic Windy Peak is located south of Bailey, Colorado, on 200 acres of beautiful mountain terrain.

ABOUT THE JOB

This unique Residential Outdoor Education position combines curriculum development, teaching and mentorship. The target audience for curriculum is 6 th grade and topics covered are history, hydrology, biology, physics, geology, and many social-emotional skill building components. As Program Specialist, you will work closely with the other Windy Peak teacher (Program Director) to coordinate logistics and mentor high school leaders who attend for one week. In addition, the Windy Peak teachers share the mentoring of our interns, who are with the program for up to one year.

Min-Mid Annual Salary Range: $40,989 - $57,654

RESPONSIBILITIES

SUMMARY: Support the District in a special assignment related to various District initiatives or projects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

-Serve as directed in a special assignment.

- Partner with principals, individual teachers, school sites, and articulation areas to implement District initiatives.

-Utilize content expertise to effectively develop curriculum, trainings or materials and facilitate this information to teachers and principals.

-Communicate and work collaboratively as part of a team.

-Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in specific content area as indicated. Most recent Performance Evaluation with a "meeting or exceeding standards" in all performance areas and overall performance. Understanding of the Colorado State Standards for specific content area. Knowledge of other applicable State or Federal laws may apply.

EXPERIENCE: Experience using a variety of assessment tools including best practices in the areas of classroom instruction, differentiation, assessments, and interventions. Demonstrated understanding of a K-12 perspective for designated subject area. Experience effectively facilitating teacher professional development.

CERTIFICATION: Valid Colorado teaching license, preferably in specific TOSA related content area.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT: Excellent communication skills and positive interpersonal skills. Demonstrated expertise in specific content area and best practices for all students ranging in abilities from special needs to accelerated learners. Demonstrated understanding of a response to intervention process including the use of a variety of assessments and core, strategic and intensive strategies. Demonstrated leadership skills in the area of professional development including organizing and facilitating sessions. Knowledge and comfort with technology applications that support District curriculum. Knowledge of and experience with District's commitment to a guaranteed and viable curriculum including current work of the content team. Knowledge and ability to think flexibly and to adapt work to the needs the specific department. Willingness to implement national, state, and District initiatives. Knowledge of current research and issues in the area of subject area. Demonstrated ability to consult with a variety of groups and individuals. Ability to manage multiple projects effectively and to meet deadlines.

SPAN OF CONTROL: This position does not have any supervisory responsibility.

  • Knowledge of best instructional practices and scaffolds for learning science in K-6.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced degree or comparable experience in content
  • Successful teaching experience in JEFFCO
  • Ability to work and/or support work across grade levels 6-12
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated flexibility and capacity for dealing with ambiguity
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, school day, and school year
  • Holds administrative license or pursuing certification
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Communicate and work collaboratively as a part of multiple teams through a variety of means (works closely with other Outdoor Lab School Principals, Program Coordinator, Program Directors, visiting school staff, parents, community members, all other Outdoor Lab stakeholders, Educational Research and Design (ERD) and the science content specialists).
  • Partner with principals, individual teachers, school sites, and articulation areas to implement new and existing curricula and assessments
  • Establish trust, rapport, and credibility with entire school community
  • Participate in ongoing personal professional learning experiences
  • Demonstrated ability to consult with and facilitate conversations with individual teachers, grade level teams, whole staffs, and other groups, which may lead to enhancement of program
  • Demonstrated success in working with adult learners
  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills
  • Demonstrate knowledge and ability to use and integrate technology to provide quality instruction
  • Demonstrate using Bridge to Curriculum to design concept based lessons
  • Shares responsibility for training, supervision, and management of high school leaders.
  • Shares responsibility for recruitment, supervision, training (to include differentiation), and evaluation of Outdoor Lab School interns.
  • Shares responsibility for enhancing the intern program to include instructional development, professional development, and coordinate the Red Rocks Community College (RRCC) class.
  • Must be able to teach all core and instructional programs for sixth grade students at Outdoor Lab.
  • Supervises the teaching done by interns and high school leaders.
  • Maintains all curriculum and instructional resources.
  • Develop/expand/guide the evolution of the high school, post-secondary, college intern program.
  • Assist in organizing and running special events, including Outdoor Lab School Open House, High Potential Week and other site rentals
  • Must be able to live and work at 8200 feet, negotiate difficult terrain and hike trails carrying materials and backpacks.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible 40-hour week and a flexible yearly schedule.
  • Must be able to work at least 1-2 overnight shifts a week with supervisory duties; lodging and meals provided.
  • Acts as administration when principal is off site or off duty.
  • Other duties as assigned.
