POSITION TITLE: Department Chair
REPORTS TO: Building Principal; Assistant Superintendent
SUPERVISES: Non-Core Area Teachers; certified and non-certified
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Experience or Training
Masters degree; Valid Type 09, 10 or 73 Illinois Teaching Certificatewith endorsement(s) in a World Language; Valid Illinois Type 75 Certificate; General Supervisory Endorsement; broad knowledge of his/her discipline and its relationship to the whole school; a minimum of five (5) years teaching experience in his/her discipline; demonstrated understanding of and compliance with District policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Preferred Experience or Training
Previous supervisory experience
Experience teaching at the secondary level
Capacity to work effectively with others and to motivate others to excel in fulfilling their responsibilities
Ability in public speaking and effective writing
Documentable leadership ability
Ability to make critical evaluations of suggestions for improving the quality of education in his/her discipline
Knowledge and experience pertaining to his/her entire discipline
Be articulate
PRINCIPAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WORK:
Type of Activities Performed Frequently
Assist in long- and short-range planning of the program; assist in curriculum development, personnel supervision, and administration of the department; understand and provide guidance in implementing District policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Types of Activities Performed Occasionally
Other administrative duties and assignments as directed.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist in three (3) major areas: curriculum development, instructional coaching and supervision, and administration.
Help develop and implement an educational philosophy for the department.
Provide continuous, effective articulation, within and throughout the department.
Give teachers, new to Proviso, assistance, working closely with the Assistant Principal and Assistant Superintendent.
Provide instructional coaching to non-core teachers in areas of gradual release of responsibility, argumentative literacy, mastery-based learning, and project-based learning.
Assist with in-service professional growth of all teachers in the department.
Develop esprit-de-corps among the staff.
Appraise and evaluate members of the department by organizing a plan for regular class visitations of both tenured and non-tenured teachers, making periodic reports, recommending teachers' placement status, identifying tenured teachers' needs for quality education, and encouraging leadership potential among all the staff.
Compile such necessary reports as requested by the Superintendent or his/her delegated authority, consistent with the efficient and effective operation of the department.
Support implementation of school improvement plan and school improvement initiative.
Implement and follow District policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Support new and existing District initiatives.
Perform other such functions as the Assistant Principal, Principal, Assistant Superintendent or delegated authority may, from time to time, request.
