Position Duration: School year 2018-2019
Location: Bolling Building Central Office
Stipend: $2,000.00

The Office of English Learners (OEL) is seeking content, ESL certified and SEI endorsed educators with experience to serve as a vetting body for the development of curriculum for a future Cape Verdean Creole dual language program. Candidates with experience writing/developing curriculum and/or experiences in teaching the Cape Verdean language and culture are needed to form a group to work together with a common goal for confirming the instructional materials and resources for the future curriculum.

In BPS, the teachers and leaders are committed to the vision of high expectations for achievement, equal access to high levels of instruction, the achievement of academic proficiency for all students. Dual Language programs are one method to close the achievement gap. The Boston Cape Verdean community is advocating for a dual language program for students in the Boston Public Schools. The vision of BPS and OEL is to establish a body of educators that will aid in establishing and vetting materials that will support the growth and development of K-12 Cape Verdean Creole Curriculum.

Reports to: OEL Dual Language Team

GOAL
To work collaboratively as a team with other BPS educators, under OEL guidance, to compile a dual language curriculum for K1 to grade 2 by using BPS curriculum as a base to create the trans-adapted version for use in Cape Verdean Creole dual language classrooms.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Generate academic vocabulary bank to be used within curriculum units.
  • Identify instructional materials and resources that will support the language of instruction and that are culturally relevant
  • Create scope and sequence of learning for language arts in Cape Verdean Creole
  • Vet or create translations, native language texts, and other curriculum materials to ensure they align with BPS curriculum and providing culturally relevant experiences for students.
  • Vet or create assessments in a variety of domains and subject areas that align to the curriculum to measure student progress.
  • Cooperate with OEL to support with professional development opportunities to support native language teachers of Cape Verdean Creole either in SLIFE, SEI or Dual Language programs.
The group is to meet at least once a month for 3 hours on a set time defined. Each meeting will have a focus with an assigned task to accomplish. A prorated payment will be made at the end of tasks completed.

QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:
  • Currently teaching in Boston Public Schools.
  • Bachelor's degree
  • A valid Massachusetts Teaching License for appropriate grade level span
  • A valid Massachusetts grade-level appropriate ESL License and/or SEI endorsement.
  • Knowledge of WIDA frameworks, Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and Common Core State Standards and BPS curriculum
  • Experience teaching in Cape Verdean Creole language and culture.
  • Bilingual and biliterate in Cape Verdean Creole
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment
