Department Description:

Under general supervision assists the Supervisor, Central Garage Services in planning, organizing, managing, appraising, and controlling the maintenance and repair of an extensive fleet of vehicular equipment, and the operation of central garage facilities on a multi-shift basis. This is a highly responsible technical supervisory and administrative work relative to the efficient operation of central garage facilities with the mission of effective, timely repair and maintenance of school buses, automobiles, trucks, and other vehicular equipment. Work requires the incumbent to exercise mature, independent judgment and administrative discretion in making decisions.

Salary Range: $70,457 - $126,980

Detailed Description:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Assists the Supervisor of Garage Operations in directing all technical employees within the garage facility; i.e., directing a program of preventive maintenance, repair and inspection of a large fleet of school buses, automobiles and trucks; plans, organizes and manages the technical activities of the department and coordinates activities with other departments;
  • Assists the Supervisor in establishing preventive maintenance, repair and operating procedures, analyzing and evaluating work methods, costs and other data to ascertain level of overall efficiency and effectiveness; improves day to day operations, procedures and techniques to effect better use of personnel, equipment, materials and space;
  • Assists in establishing priorities, production standards and controls over maintenance, equipment and supplies; resolves problems concerning technical matters, operations, personnel, equipment, facilities and parts;
  • Conducts periodic inspection of vehicle maintenance facilities to consult with and observe performance of subordinates, determine status of operations, provide any required assistance, and insure conformance with prescribed standards of quality and safety;
  • Assists in planning and directing the inspection of school buses as required by State law;
  • Assists other departments in determining requirements in preparing technical specifications for the purchase of equipment and materials; insures that purchases meet the specifications;
  • Assists the Supervisor in developing any organizational changes in structures, determining personnel requirements, and making personnel assignments to shifts and locations; interviews and recommends personnel for employment; evaluates employee performance and recommends personnel actions; plans and directs in-service training; keeps informed of the latest methods and techniques of fleet maintenance and repair;
  • Assumes direction of facility in the absence of the Supervisor of Garage Operations; and
  • Performs related work as required.


  • Job Requirements:

    The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.
  • Considerable knowledge of administrative practices and procedures involved in vehicle maintenance operations including budget preparation and analysis, financial accounting, inventory control through data processing, etc.;
  • Considerable knowledge of fleet maintenance and repair practices; ability to plan, lay out, supervise and review the work of a large number of subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale;
  • Ability to maintain records of work performed and to periodically summarize such information in report form;
  • Ability to deal effectively with school officials, vendors and others;
  • Thorough knowledge of all safety regulations, practices and procedures; and
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.

  • EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Graduation from college or university preferred with a degree in maintenance management, engineering, business administration or a related field with progressively responsible experience in automotive maintenance work, including foreman, and some supervisory and administrative shop supervision of a large fleet operation of varied type vehicles; or any equivalent combination of experience or training, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

    CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator?s License with driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle. (See Prince George?s County Public Schools? Bulletin A-26-85 dated October 8, 1984.)

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Assists in overseeing the day-to-day management and administration of the Central Garage staff and its operation.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
