This Associate Director of ELA/Literacy is within Smarter Balanced division of the University of California Santa Cruz Extension. The selected candidate must be able to work remotely from a home office. 

Smarter Balanced is a member-led organization of states and territories that collaborate to provide formative interim and summative assessment resources ( e.g., tools, items, tests, etc.) that help educators better prepare their students to be college and career ready after they leave high school. 

This position involves analytical studies on a variety of policies, projects, programs, and issues in support of a function, research initiatives, program and/or organizational unit, or in research of new or changing systems and programs. Assists in policy and program planning, development, administration, management and implementation; interprets, monitors and analyzes information regarding policies and procedures and provides consultative services to department administrators and other stakeholders.

The Associate Director of ELA/Literacy uses advanced operational concepts and objectives to resolve highly complex issues reviewing and creating assessments. Regularly works on issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for creating high-quality English language arts/literacy (ELA/literacy) assessments in grades 3-8 and high school. Primarily deals with programs and proposals with broad impact across the function, research initiative, program and/or organization. Develops and oversees the implementation of new programs and processes. 

Qualifications / Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Advanced knowledge of common organizational- or research-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and influence, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes. 
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable policy analysis techniques. 
  • Student teaching internship or full-time teaching experience in kindergarten through 12.
  • Within the past 12 months, the applicant must have classroom teaching or related industry experience 
  • Advanced project management skills. 
  • Thorough knowledge of organizational or initiative processes, protocols and procedures.
  • Advanced analytical / problem-solving skills.

Special Conditions of Employment 

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must be able to work remotely from a home office. 
  • Must be able to occasionally travel.
