Position Summary:

The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) serves as the investigative watchdog of CPS. The OIG was recently given responsibility of all cases involving the sexual abuse or sexual harassment of CPS students and has formed a new team to investigate such cases. The OIG is seeking to hire a staff attorney to provide support reviewing and analyzing investigative files and drafting investigative summaries. Under direction of the Inspector General and other supervisory personnel, the staff attorney will provide legal writing support to the OIG regarding investigations involving the sexual abuse or sexual harassment of CPS students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review, interpret and summarize collected information covering all phases of an investigation, demonstrating sound analysis of the issues
  • Write and edit investigative summary reports, which are sent to the Chicago Board of Education
  • Collaborate with attorneys and investigators to resolve investigative issues
  • Communicates with the Inspector General and Chief Investigator regarding recommended actions for the Chicago Board of Education
  • Perform additional ad hoc duties as assigned


Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Demonstrated superior ability to write concise, logical and analytical reports to convey complex issues
  • Exceptional analytical and critical thinking skills demonstrated by ability to quickly digest large amounts of information to provide high level factual and legal analysis
  • Extremely effective communication and collaboration skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Strong ability to identify and escalate issues as appropriate and present them along with analyses to superiors
  • Refined judgment with the ability to manage highly sensitive and confidential information
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple deadlines and work independently while maintaining high levels of organization


Minimum Qualifications:

  • JD from an ABA accredited law school
  • Admission to the Illinois Bar
  • Provision of two writing samples (5-15 pages each)


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional editing and/or law clerk experience
  • Law review/journal experience
  • Knowledge of sexual assault or sexual harassment issues, the relationship of sexual assault or sexual harassment on victims
  • Working knowledge of Title IX and related laws, including an understanding of ongoing developments in Title IX


Residency Requirement:

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
