ABOUT GIRLS PREPARATORY SCHOOL:

Girls Preparatory School (GPS) was founded to provide girls with the necessary courses to pursue a college education, GPS has proudly graduated almost 6000 young women since 1906. Currently, 131 faculty and staff serve about 600 girls in grades 6-12 with a college preparatory curriculum that includes a full complement of humanities, arts and STEM courses and co-curricular programs of leadership development, athletics, performing arts and community engagement.

 

With a $14M annual budget, a $30M endowment, 57 acres and 300,000 square feet of facilities, GPS aspires to create leaders by engaging the mind, stimulating the spirit, instilling values, building self-confidence and encouraging girls to recognize their membership in a global community.

 

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The candidate should be a student of world languages and be able to demonstrate he/she has a deep educational and academic background in world languages, including pedagogy. Candidates must be able to teach upper level French through Advanced Placement. A preference will be given to those who can speak and teach Spanish or a non-Western Language as well. The ideal candidate will also have experience with interdisciplinary connections and cultivating global perspectives in students.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the World Languages Chair, the French Teacher will:

  • Plan, develop and execute lessons that reflect the curriculum that align with ACTFL standards
  • Adapt world language curriculum for individual, small group, and remedial instruction to meet the needs of identified students or subgroups of students
  • Evaluate the academic and social growth of students
  • Evaluate student progress and the ability to meet courses standards in World Language knowledge and skills
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior
  • Plan and develop lesson plans and teaching outlines
  • Employ a variety of methodologies in teaching and instructing pupils, including demonstrations, discussions, and lectures
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and objectives as indicated in the lesson plans for the lessons, units, or projects assigned.
  • Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting lesson objectives.
  • Collaborate with colleagues within the department
  • Advisory duties-advises students in small advisory groups with all the responsibilities that this entails.
  • May be asked to co-sponsor or sponsor a club or school activity.
  • Knows emergency evacuation routes for the classrooms assigned.
  • Knows procedures for referring students who are disciplinary problems.
  • Knows school procedures and regulations.
  • Performs other related duties as directed by the Upper or Middle School Division Head.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Strong knowledge of Francophone culture and and history
  • Keen interest in guiding and inspiring girls.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills, with the ability to balance the needs of the girls.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to communicate with a diverse range of constituents using different modes.

 

 

EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in French required.
  • Must have 3 or more years of teaching experience.
