PURPOSE OF JOB: Serves as the chief aide for the Superintendent, providing support in all district work, allowing the Superintendent to focus on achieving the goals of the system.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties of the Kansas City Public School's Chief of Staff include, but are not limited to, the following:

Serves as an aide to the Superintendent; supports the Superintendent in dealing with administrative, educational, legislative and public affairs issues. Analyzes and manages sensitive issues that arise frequently in the rapidly changing environment of the Superintendent's office.

Coordinates and integrates the work of department directors in the development and implementation of policies and procedures, in order to focus the system on improving academic achievement.

Provides oversight and direction related to district relations, media relations, parental and community involvement, legislative matters and change management.

Directs all facets of the daily operations of the Office of the Superintendent to ensure compliance with board policies and regulations and local, state and federal laws.

Oversee the Title IX and Federal program communication.

Provides policy analysis and strategic consultation to the Superintendent and senior management staff on major issues impacting the district.

Prepares and/or contributes to the preparation of reports, presentations and responses on district issues.

Coordinates special projects on behalf of the Superintendent.

Continuously updates professional knowledge by reading professional journals and research papers; attending seminars, conferences, and workshops.

Serves as the spokesperson for the district, coordinating all aspects of the district's work with electronic and print media.

Maintains current knowledge on all aspects of the district operation, and is able to state the position of the Superintendent and Board of Education on such issues.

Provides support for schools and departments in communication with the public.

Composes correspondence for the Superintendent and Board of Education, handling sensitive matters with discretion, judgement and sensitivity.

Serves as the Public Information Officer for the district, directing the response to all Freedom of Information Act requests.

Coordinates the response to all external inquires and complaints to the Superintendent's office, including from students, parents, citizens and other organizations.

Represents the district in the community, with the Missouri Legislature, and with external organizations.

Other duties as assigned, in order to allow the Superintendent to focus on providing instructional leadership to the system.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Yes

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor degree required, Master's degree preferred.

Broad knowledge of all aspects of the school district's work.

Experience working in all aspects of education at the federal, state and local levels.

Excellent with written and public speaking skills.

Strong facilitation and team-building skills.

Ability to focus on multiple tasks at once.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

COMMUNICATION: Maintains communication with internal and external stakeholders such as teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students. Compiles data for statistical purposes. Maintains confidentiality regarding district records. Ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

ORGANIZATION: Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics of data, people, or things.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, learning theories, correspondence, and protocols. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, the general public, and government officials as directed.
