The position of Principal of Holy Cross High School will be filled by a professional educator. It demands a person with a multi-faceted skill set and many gifts and interests that align with those of our diverse and talented school community. Leadership, communication, spirituality, vision, creativity and accountability are some of the key attributes that are expected. As the recognized academic leader of the school, the Principal is responsible for day-to-day operations and management of the faculty and the curriculum. The Principal also has primary responsibility for student life outside the classroom, including oversight of student development, discipline and engagement.
Celebrating its 50thAnniversary, Holy Cross is widely respected for the depth and quality of its educational model, and its success in preparing students to live lives of purpose, spirit and compassion. It is expected that the Principal will have exceptional talents, experience and abilities. Holy Cross High School was founded in an effort to bring Catholic education to the Greater Waterbury area. Holy Cross High School is part of a network of educational institutions under the auspice of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Moreau Province. This includes twenty-five schools in the United States and seventy worldwide.
Archbishop O’Brien made the initial announcement of the school in 1966. There was an immediate need for such a school due to Waterbury’s large Catholic population. Groundbreaking was held in 1967 on thirty-one acres in Waterbury’s West End on Oronoke Road. The school officially opened its doors on October 7, 1968. Originally an all-boys institution, Holy Cross became co-educational in 1975 when it merged with the all-girls school, Waterbury Catholic High School.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, interest in the school soared. Rigorous academic preparation reigned supreme. In 1997, Holy Cross became one of the first schools to introduce block scheduling into the school day. In the new millennium, the school continued to embrace its time-honored traditions, student leaders and implementation of technology. Also, several capital projects were completed and revolutionized the way Crusaders gathered together for times of work and times of play.
