The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has set ambitious goals to ensure that every child -- in every school and in every neighborhood -- has access to a world-class learning experience from birth, resulting in graduation from high school ready for success in college, career and civic life. The Children First Fund: The Chicago Public Schools Foundation (CFF) is CPS' fundraising partner. In partnership with CPS, the CFF secures and stewards philanthropic resources in ways that best supports the CPS Vision and its students.

Position Overview

Reporting to and in partnership with the Executive Director (ED), the Major Gifts Director will be responsible for managing and cultivating relationships with major gift prospects, as well as identifying new prospects and innovative strategies for the engagement of prominent CPS alumni. In this new role, the Major Gifts Director will design, implement and manage our alumni giving and major gift programs, as the Children First Fund is relaunched as a proactive fundraising entity and partnership arm for CPS.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced development professional with success in raising gifts of $100,000 or greater. This person will be responsible for generating revenue from individuals and families, including prominent CPS alumni.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a strategic approach for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donors and donor prospects.

  • Determines and leads activities, programs, and reunions for CPS alumni which initiate, foster, and promote positive alumni relations.

  • Secure major gifts at the $100K+ level.

  • Manage CRM to track and cultivate donors and prospects.

  • Work with the Associate Director of Development to align efforts and set goals.

  • Track and report progress using specific metrics.



Education and Experience Required

  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • A minimum of 5 years experience in development.

  • CFRE Certification preferred.



Skills & Abilities Required

  • Advanced knowledge of all aspects of fundraising and donor relations.

  • At least 5 years of nonprofit fundraising experience and have shown an ability to secure individual and major gifts and meet objectives.

  • Proficiency with using a donor database, prospect research and other wealth screening tools to aid in development strategy.

  • Strong written and verbal skills that compel individuals to action.

  • Track record of strong leadership and management; ability to set vision, define tactics, develop and monitor KPI's and lead towards the achievement of collective objectives.

  • Strong relationship-building skills with various high-level stakeholders.

  • Self-starter who can anticipate problems and develop preemptive solutions.

  • Ability to be flexible and to adapt to a continually shifting environment.

  • Passionate about making a material impact in the lives of students.



Residency Requirement

CPS employees are required to be actual residence of the City of Chicago within six months of beginning employment, and are required to maintain Chicago residency throughout employment.
