General Description

All employees start off as a substitute with the possibility of becoming permanent employees.

Adult ESOL instructors work part-time in a classroom setting two days per week providing instruction in the four skill areas, civics, and workplace readiness. Instructors plan and implement lessons based on a program curriculum and class syllabus. Instructors assist with program registration, assessment, and maintain reports and student records. Class periods last for 2.5 hours in morning and evening classes.

Essential Job Functions

  • Instructs students in English acquisition emphasizing reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills
  • Creates detailed lesson plans and syllabus
  • Attends 6 staff meetings and two professional development activities each year
  • Administers assessments each semester
  • Maintains student records, attendance, and testing information
  • Conducts conferences and reports student progress
  • Conducts follow-up with students as needed
  • Performs duties within required time frames
  • Communicates regularly with administration, teachers, and students
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Knowledge of effective practices and methodologies of instruction. Working skill in the use of technology to deliver instruction and support distance learning. Demonstrated ability to develop instructional goals to design and deliver instruction and assess students' learning. Demonstrated ability to organize, schedule and monitor work assignments. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, make decisions, and analyze problems.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Must hold a valid Virginia teaching license.
  • Instructors should have teaching experience in the classroom, tutoring or related field work.
  • Instructors are expected to develop skills through professional development and maintain required certifications as mandated by the VDOE.
