BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

ESL, bilingual credentials, and/or foreign language fluency preferred.

STATE REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's Degree in School Psychology with a minimum of 60 graduate semester hours and must be certified or licensed by the State Department of Education as a school psychologist.

The basic function of the school psychologist is to work with all school personnel to help make education for students a positive and rewarding experience. School psychologists use their training and skills to help ensure that every child can learn in a safe, healthy, and supportive environment.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/ILLUSTRATIVE EX OF WORK:

The school psychologist promotes educationally and psychologically healthy school environments to optimize student learning. The school psychologist utilizes current trends in research, assessment, intervention, referral, counseling, consultation, and crisis management to assess appropriate services. The School Psychologist: 1. Is responsible for the assessment of students in order to assist in the measurement and interpretation of a student's intellectual, social, emotional and educational development. The school psychologist assures that the techniques and instruments used during a psychological evaluation are appropriate for the student. 1/2002 2. Participates in Child Study to provide recommendations to teachers, parents and counselors, addressing student concerns. 3. Provides informal counseling to students (individual or group), to assist with development of appropriate social/emotional skills. 4. Assists in the development of educational and behavioral management programs required to alleviate or remediate behaviors. 5. Provides consultation to teachers and parents to facilitate student educational, social and emotional growth. 6. Assures that, as a result of a recommendation for assessment, a comprehensive report is developed and written in descriptive, non-technical terms that may be easily understood by parents and teachers. 7. Insures that recommendations made as a result of the psychological evaluation are practical, educationally based, and student driven. 8. Participates in Eligibility Meetings to provide assistance in the identification of those students who require intervention in their educational program. 9. Insures that adequate safeguards for the privacy and confidentiality of information are maintained per County regulations. 10. Provides formal "Counseling as a Related Service" as part of the IEP process. 11. Works collaboratively with other Student Services staff providing consultation, counseling, intervention, referral and crisis management within the school environment (i.e. substance abuse, attendance, school health nurse, guidance, human relations). 12. Works collaboratively with school administration and Guidance Department to provide crisis intervention, violence prevention, and suicide prevention service within the school environment. 13. Maintains knowledge in current trends in assessment, service delivery models and best practices for school psychologists. 14. Supervises the work of school psychologist interns as needed 15. Participates in monthly staff development, inservices, division-wide inservice and professional conferences. 16. Maintains an adequate balance between counseling, consultation, referrals, evaluations and program intervention/prevention services. 1/2002 17. Performs other duties as assigned.
