Department Description:

Under the direction of the Supervisor of Central Garage Services, the Automotive Trainer performs instructional work in the training and retraining of mechanics, trades helpers, service attendants, glass/upholstery technicians, tire specialists, and garage foremen. An employee in this class is responsible for training of all entry level, and the on-going training of current employees who work on repairing school system buses and other fleet vehicles. The incumbent of this position attends classroom and hands-on training at training centers and colleges to keep up with state-of-the-art mechanical technology beneficial to the staff of the central garage. The work is performed within the general guidelines with leeway granted for the exercise of independent government. Supervision is exercised over those being trained.

Brief Description:

This is an ASASP Unit III position, 12 months - Pay Table 900 - Grade 24

Salary: $52,576 - $94,753

Detailed Description:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Plans and executes on-going training for entry level and senior Central Garage employees in state-of-the-art mechanical technology;
  • Receives regular training from training centers and colleges in state-of-the-art technology in all phases of the mechanical field;
  • Provides sixteen hours of in-service training for each central garage employee annually;
  • May assist in evaluating central garage or area foreman as needed;
  • Communicates with vendors that provide supplies, parts, etc., to keep up with the state-of-the-art equipment and materials being introduced to the transportation industry;
  • Maintains in-service training records, prepares reports and submits to Supervisor, Garage Operations;
  • Keeps up to date on all departmental related activities; and
  • Performs related duties as assigned.


  • Job Requirements:

    The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Thorough knowledge of the mechanical functioning of school buses and other fleet vehicles;
  • Thorough knowledge of standard practices and tools of various trades associated with the automotive mechanic field; ability and willingness to attend, on-going training to keep up with state-of-the-art mechanical technology;
  • Ability to develop and administer an on going training program;
  • Ability to conduct both classroom and on-the-job instruction for central garage employees;
  • Thorough knowledge of the standard practices and tools of the automotive mechanic trade;
  • Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to make simple arithmetical tabulations;
  • Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems;
  • Skill in the use and care of hand and machine tools employed in motor repair and adjustment work; and
  • Skills in adjusting defects in automotive equipment; mechanical aptitude; and must be in good physical condition.

  • EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Considerable experience as an automotive mechanic, including some advanced technical mechanical training, and completion of a high school course, with five (5) years or more of mechanical background working with school buses and other fleet vehicles; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

    CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
