Description of Position
The City on a Hill Urban Teaching Fellowship is a one-year, $20,000 fellowship intended to train and license individuals interested in a career teaching in urban public high schools. Get paid to earn initial licensure in Massachusetts and to begin your Master of Education degree at Boston University at a significantly reduced cost. For the 2019-2020 school year, City on a Hill will have Fellows at both Boston campuses: City on a Hill Circuit Street and City on a Hill Dudley Square.
Program Vision : New teachers learn to become effective teachers by working with experienced teacher-mentors in a collegial community of learners and leaders. To improve student performance within an educational community, the entire learning community is committed to raising teacher performance. Mentoring of fellow teachers and aspiring teachers fosters collegiality and professional growth among all members of the City on a Hill community.
Program Commitment : As a network of charter public schools, City on a Hill does not ignore the crisis in public education. The aim of the Urban Teaching Fellowship Program is to train quality teachers to send into urban schools around the country. Participants commit to teaching in an urban public school for at least two years after graduating from the program.
Earning Licensure : Teaching Fellows earn Massachusetts Initial Licensure in one of the following subject areas: English, History, Math, Science, or Spanish. Each Fellow is paired with an experienced teacher who incrementally guides the Fellow from an observation role to full teaching duties over the course of a calendar year. In addition to fulfilling the requirements of Massachusetts licensure, the Fellow also creates a final portfolio and makes a presentation at the end of the year demonstrating proficiency in urban teaching.

Required Qualifications
  • Belief that every student, regardless of background, can and must achieve academically at high levels
  • Bachelor's degree in Science (or a closely related field).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Some teaching or mentorship experience (particularly in an urban setting) is preferred for this position but not required. Hired Fellows are expected to enter the program having passed both the Communication and Literacy and the Math MTEL exams.
