The preschool teacher works in conjunction with the preschool paraprofessional to manage the operation of the preschool classroom. The preschool teacher will have a Bachelor's of Education with an emphasis in early childhood education and a current Kansas teaching certificate. It is encouraged that the preschool teacher stay informed of current early childhood education issues. The preschool teacher reports directly to the building principal.
Classroom Responsibilities
The preschool teacher will plan and implement developmentally-appropriate lesson plans that include all areas of learning, such as physical (large and small motor), emotional, social, and cognitive. The teacher will implement the following curricula: Everyday Math in Pre-K, Jump Start for Literacy, Handwriting Without Tears, and Second Step Social Emotional. The preschool teacher will create a print-rich environment, along with learning centers. The teacher will coordinate class fieldtrips that are relevant to the curriculum. The teacher will interact appropriately with the children throughout the day, as well as providing a positive model for children to follow. The teacher will help serve the meals and eat with the children while encouraging conversation. The preschool teacher will maintain teacher/student ratios at all times. The teacher will perform school duties as assigned by the building principal.

Communication

The preschool teacher will maintain open communication with the parents, paraprofessionals, and the principal of the program. This includes interaction with parents at drop-off and pick-up times, as well as scheduling and performing parent/teacher conferences, weekly meetings with paraprofessional concerning the classroom, and informing the principal of preschool happenings (either positive or negative). The preschool teacher will provide information about the preschool to parents. The teacher will maintain confidentiality of the parents and children of the program at all times. The preschool teacher will maintain open communication with the preschool paraprofessional concerning the children, classroom, and lesson plans. The preschool teacher will be a mentor to the preschool paraprofessional by taking opportunities to explain where needed and by allowing him/her to lead parts of the day, as appropriate. The teacher will collaborate with other teachers, both other preschool teachers in the program and other teachers in the building, to help maintain a positive, professional attitude.

Maintenance

The preschool teacher will maintain a safe and orderly classroom. This includes cleaning and monitoring of equipment. The teacher will maintain preschool records, such as attendance, sign-in/sign-out sheets, enrollment, and a waiting list. The preschool teacher will maintain a professional relationship with the parents of the program, as well as other staff in the building.

The preschool teacher position can include any of the listed duties and other duties as needed by the building principal to help create a successful classroom and school environment.
