Education, Experience, and Licensure Requirements

Director of Special Education

  • Master’s degree in special education from an accredited college or university
  • Current New Mexico Administrator License
  • Minimum of three (3) years experience in special education

Qualifications:

  • High degree of knowledge of state and federal regulations         pertaining to K-12 Education programs
  • Ability to work with changing priorities, regulations and deadlines
  • Ability to analyze situations accurately and to recommend necessary action
  • Effective staff and public relations skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective skills in planning and organization
  • Ability to perform essential job functions and job task requirements

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates programs and personnel responsible for Special Education
  • Organizes and develops in-service programs for Special Education personnel appropriate to the needs of administrative, instructional, and support staff
  • Evaluates program procedures to ensure that compliance with standards of various regulatory agencies is acceptable and that instructional efforts are appropriate for identified individuals
  • Assists in writing proposals, developing programs, facilitating in-service training activities, and developing handbooks as may be required for the Special Education program
  • Interprets Special Education regulations to school administrative and instructional personnel
  • Monitors services of all private ancillary contractors to ensure compliance and maintenance of services
  • Assists with recruitment of Special Education personnel in conjunction with building principals
  • Responds to formal complaints filed to OCR and/or the NMPED Special Education Unit
  • Performs other duties as requested by the Superintendent

Contract Period:

242 days, per contract
